Larrikin Lodge will live long in the memory for the unstinting friendliness of the owner – he was great! The hostel itself wasn’t amazing, but clean and functional. The majority of the rooms are dorms and occupied by longer-term travellers who are working in Mackay. We stayed in a double, which was fine, although we did have to walk through a dorm room to access it, which was a little inconvenient. The kitchen is a good size and well equipped and the bathrooms were also clean, but were slightly separated from the main sleeping area. Larrikin Lodge is a good place to stay if you are looking for a cheap bed for the night. Cheers Bob!

Larrikin Lodge is quite a small but a very cosy and friendly place to stay. The main guy who works there Bob was so helpful and friendly it made quite a change! Theres a small kitchen facility, fridges and also a no-alcohol policy which was nice cos it results in a really nice chilled out, family-esque environment. Theres satellite TV available and in the evenings everyone sits around chilling and chatting. Its also very quiet but really close to shops etc.

My only slightly critical comment is that the "double room" is actually a small room thats reached by going through another small 3-bed dorm room and is separated from this room by a slidey door. The room partition doesnt reach all the way up to the cetiling so essentially you are still semi-sharing with the other people next door as you have to come and go through their room to get to yours and everything between the 2 rooms can be heard. But the super-comfy bed made up for it :)
