“Such a shame!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We stayed in one of the lodges and on entry were struck by the sickly smell of cleaning products that made it smell like a cheap motel. The room was musty and very outdated - I was expecting a simple room and wasn't looking for anything flashy, but the furnishings were old and tatty and very 80's, much like the common areas (eg reception, the library). The dining arrangements weren't great - we were told when we arrived for dinner that they have communal dining, so you're expected to share a table with other guests. If you prefer a more intimate dinner you need to make a booking for one of the few private tables, though to be honest you're better of eating elsewhere as the food was pretty ordinary. Overall definitely not worth the money we paid.

You can't fault the location - the mountains are stunning and the walks though the national park are amazing. Just a shame the accommodation is such a let down!

“Disappointing”

We stayed in one of the original rooms that are in a block near the common areas. The room was dusty, basic and not the romantic retreat we had hoped for. But at least we had our own toilet and shower as most rooms don't!!!! Yep! You read that right, most guests have to trudge all the way to a campground style block to use those facilities.

When it's cold...which it often is...and dark...which it often is...and the night critters are out and about....which they always are, the very last thing you won't is to deal with that arrangement!

This is not a cheap place...cost wise...and yet the food services rate between poor to average.

Shared tables at meal time...don't expect an intro by the hostess...pre dinner drinks tht are late or don't happen...abseiling that is a massive rip off and old fashioned bring decor and book selection in the library.

What is good? The cafe up the rad and the bush walks. Not much else.

Just go for the day.

Room Tip: Don't stay there. Just go to the area on a day trip and save your money.

I'm sorry that the Mountain Lodge wasn't exactly your style. We do follow a 'guest house'-style format which includes communal dining. It's a great way to meet new people and share experiences.

I do need to correct the comment where you said "most rooms" don't have a shower and toilet. It is correct that 13 rooms don't but in fact most (27) do have their own ensuite bathroom. Our 13 "Casurina" cabins are the original and now heritage-listed accommodation. As well as their historic value, they provide a price point that suit some of our guests. They are fully booked this Easter for example.

If you visit again, you may find our new Sky Lodges suit your expectations better. Opened in February 2012, these are modern, stylish studio rooms and self-contained apartments. All feature balconies, spa baths and fireplaces (you correctly pointed out that it does get cool up here on the mountain) with northern views. Do take the time to drive up one weekend and inspect the Sky Lodges.

“Terrific walks and wonderful staff”

We recently camped at Binna Burra and had an amazing time. The fact that it rained made the trip all the more better. The forest was full of life and many animals were active.I have read a lot of reviews on Binna Burra and think it is important to remember the history and reason for travelling to such a place. No the facilities are not 5 star, and neither did I expect them to be. Within the camping fee was access to bathroom/shower facilities, BBQ's and laundry/ dishwashing zone all which were clean and well presented. The camping is located about 5 minutes walk from the main lodges and set within a rainforest setting. The camping has two main zones, with smaller tent camping set in the forest and a more open area for camper trailers. I stayed at site 66 which was away from most people. Adjacent to the camping area is the Tea House Cafe / Restaurant which is open Sat & Sun and offers pizza nights and $4 beer/ wine happy hour.
Along with the long list of walking tracks, the lodge offers many activities (some free and some for a small fee). During the evenings we made our way to the library upstairs and enjoyed a talk on the animals or to watch a documentary.
While all staff were exceptional, the resident ranger Dean was fantastic. He was highly knowledgeable and exude a true passion for the history of the lodge, animals and general environment. Dean along with other staff have guided walks through the forest pointing out native foods, animal types and the history of the location.
The lodge contains a restaurant and fulls service bar with standard prices. Binna Burra was a stand out compared to Oreillys with fewer people (only 2 other people camping) and no buses constantly coming and going.
Overall Binna Burra was a fantastic trip and I hope to return in the next few months.

Room Tip: When selecting a camping area I would avoid camp site number 54 as it is close to the carpark and T...

“Great place to take the family!”

My husband and I and our 4 year old daughter stayed at Binna Burra Mountain Lodge in September 2011. We found the lodge facilities to be very rustic and cosy - exactly what we were after! Most of the cabins were built in the 30's and 40's and it is a privilege to be able to stay in such unique accommodation. You wouldn't spend your days inside them, as they are not very spacious, however they are heritage listed and situated inside Lamington National Park - with some of the best walking tracks anywhere in the world - so why would you stay indoors anyway!? For those who do not want to explore, there are plenty of places to tuck yourself away and read a good book - by fireplace in winter or out in the bush in summer. There are plenty of activities for kids - games/ books/ playgrounds and they will even do early meals for children. Binna Burra is a place well worth spending a few days with your family of all ages.

Room Tip: There are a variety of room options, as well as fixed tent, camping and dormitory accommodations ava...

“Great walks but not going back to the Lodge”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2011

We recently took some friends from the UK to the Lodge. Having been there with other friends a couple of months ago, we decided that, while the place is tired and the food and overall approach very dated, we would at least be able to enjoy the experience without cooking. Unfortunately, the administrative staff took the opportunity to challenge us arrival, and ultimately to impose a charge, for a small unpaid drinks from the previous visit, without any prior conversation with us in the interim period. (The amount had not been presented to us on our previous checkout.) This episode demonstrated that the administration systems and approach to customer service are also outdated and we won't be going back - it's a shame that so much emphasis is put on the resort not changing, apparently as excuse for lack of investment. It simply does not meet the standards expected by most international tourists and indeed, all but the most diehard domestic visitors.

Thank you for your review. It's a shame you won't be back due to an administrative mistake in presenting an unpaid bill from a previous visit. It was our fault in not presenting this to you on your stay 2 months ago and for this we apologise. With regards to the resort not changing, we have no excuses and have not tried to present any. Our aim is to stay with our traditions and not become over-commercial. Standard upgrades such as beds and soft furnishings are upgraded, but structural changes are limited on our heritage-listed rooms. We wish you all the best with your future travels.
