My wife and I recently spent 11 days touring the South Island of New Zealand. We had a wonderful time in Queenstown, and looked forward to cursing the Milford Sound. The 4 hour drive to the Sound, followed by a 4 hour drive back to Queenstown, seemed less than attractive, so we elected to spend the night in Te Anua. We are definitely glad we did... we chose the Fiordland Lodge and it was a wonderful experience. The Manager, Andy Cunningham, greeted us warmly and with great personalized service. The luxury accommodations are warm and inviting, with plenty of room, and wonderful lake and mountain views. The lodge was warm, welcoming, and relaxing. The food exceptional and the canapés and bar service were excellent. While watching the beautiful sunset, we were mesmerized by the sight of the sheep and deer also returning to their accommodations from a busy day grazing on the lush local grasses. The entrance is a little hard to see at first, but I definitely recommend staying a night, or two or three at the Fiordland Lodge, a wonderful and completely unexpected surprise!!... not to be confused with Fiordland National Park lodge which offers comfortable accommodations more for backpackers...
