“a good base for visiting Milford & Doubtful Sound”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

the Anchorage is a typical 60's-style motel (i.e. park in front of your unit), as seemed to be common in small towns across New Zealand, and the best of the 5 such places I stayed at. The 1-bedroom unit is very spacious, with kitchenette, sky-tv, and wi-fi...all of which worked quite well. It's on a quiet side street, and only a short walk to "downtown Te Anau".. There isn't much to do in Te Anau, and having been snowed out of my first attempt to visit Milford Sound, the large collection of magazines and DVD's for borrowing in the motel lobby was a real benefit. If you're using one of the tour buses to go to Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound, they'll pick you up and drop you off right at the Anchorage, The price was quite reasonable, though I benefited from off-season rates in July.

“Great for a Family if you can get the 3 Bedroom house!”

We stayed two nights at Te Anu as the jumping off point for a day trip to Doubtful Sound. As we were traveling with our entire family (six of us), a normal hotel wouldn't work. Fortunately, the Anchorage hotel has solved the problem by purchasing a couple houses that adjoin the hotel ground. We were able to rent the 3 bedroom house, and it was perfect. We all had our own bedrooms, and it had a large fully furnished kitchen and a living room that would accomodate us all. Most impprtantly it had laundry facilities so we could keep up with the dirty clothes on a long two week trip. The hotel/house was an eacy 5 minute walk to town, and there are several nice bars and restuarants with good food. The one we liked the best was called the Moose bar, it also had spectacular views over Lake Te Anu. While the three bedroom unit isn't a brand new home, it was well taken care of and the owners have added nice little touches like the toiletries in the bathroom, as well as free Wi-Fi. There were only two shortfalls with the unit, only one of which anything can be done about. First, there is only one bathroom - so you need to make sure people are moving thorugh if everyone wants a shower before leaving for the day. The second shortfall was the lack of a hair dryer, but that's something the Owners could correct in short order should they choose to do so. All in all I would highly recommend this as a reasonably priced place to stay with a family. What a pretty town!

Thank you for staying with us and taking the time to do a review. The three bedroom house has had a upgrade in the last few years and offers the extra space for family groups. It dose only have one bathroom and there is no way around this one unfortually. There is a usually a hair dryer in the bathroom however on this ocassion, it must have been put in some place different where it was not found by the occupants.

“Clean and very modern rooms”

The rooms were very clean and surprisingly also very modern. We stayed here for 1 night on our way back from MIlford Sound and wished we stayed here longer. The room was very spacious with a kitchenette, sky tv and dvd player. The location was about a 10-15 minute walk from the town centre but only about a minute from the lake front. Very quiet location and staff were very friendly! Thanks for a great stay! :)

“Nicely set out round garden with trampoline, garden chairs and lots of flowers.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

A real effort has been made to make this motel look attractive, with flowers in the front and rear of the units. The furnishings are of good quality although one of the drawers needed attention as it was difficult to open. The bed was very comfortable. The kitchen was generally well equipped however I would question the provision of 6 wine glasses but only 2 of everything else, including cutlery. It is useful to have extra when cooking! The bathroom is nice and it is appreciated to have decent toiletries provided. A good base if visiting the Sounds, 5 minutes' walk from the town centre.

“Best value for money anywhere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

For about AU$125 a night we weren't expecting much so were delighted with this accommodation. I was expecting one of those 70s stlye rooms with an old TV bolted onto the ceiling but that wasn't the case. I shuddred what the 'spa bath' would be like. But overall we were pleasantly surprised. The room was fairly modern (plasma TV, nice kitchenette etc), the spa bath was fantastic. There was Sky (about 40 channels), free wi-fi and real milk! None of that UHT stuff. It's also one street back from the lake, so about a two minute walk and about a five minute stroll from the main street.

Room Tip: There are only 13 rooms, all ground level so I imagine they're all much of a muchness.
