On arrival we received a very warm welcome from the receptionist and were given the key to our room. The directions were a little vague and we had trouble finding it. The room is large but dark and definitely needs more light. On the stairwells there were a number of dead flies on the windowsills, it hadn't been cleaned for some time. Then it got worse! The restaurant was closed because the chef was on holiday. There is a decent looking bar with a pool table, dartboard and large screen TV. But the bar was closed, so we took our own drink in! Then the staff and their families came in with their own drinks too. How odd is that? The coffee machine in reception was also out of order. The location isn't good either, too far out of town. Look elsewhere if staying in Te Anau, which itself is very quiet and subdued anyway.

We stayed here for 3 nights in Jan 2012 as it was in our budget but compared to places we had stayed previously in NZ, it was not as good value for money.

We had a budget room with a double and single bed, ensuite and a TV and fridge - and absolutely no room to swing a cat, let alone open your bags. The hotel was clean but dated (think 1970's) and with the long corridors with doors either side, felt like something out "The Shining". We picked it on advice of iSite in Christchurch because of price, availability and kitchen facilities. The latter, whilst it had a stunning view of the mountains, was very poorly equipped and I think suffered from guests removing cutlery (there were plenty of knives on our first night, but only 1 by the last night).

On the plus side, the guest laundry was very good.

If I did it all again, I would look to stay closer to the town centre / waterfront and pay extra if I had to (it was a 15 minute walk to the main shopping/restaurant area of Te Anau).

Stayed here overnight heading to Milford Sound. Wanted to save some money so booked a cheaper room - big mistake for us! After an hour or so my partner and I started coming up in bites and itching. Went to reception where staff was just as horrified as we were! Room was closed off and we were provided with disinfectant for bags etc and upgraded to newly renovated hotel room which was nice, clean and warm. Mixed feelings due to original room but staff handled situation as I would have hoped.

Hotel... Well it does have an indoor pool (in a tin shed and authentic over chlorinated stench), a golf course Right outside our door (but they can't find the golf clubs or balls), a "Retro" bar (but I'm not sure that counts if they just haven't renovated anything in 40 years), an in room hi-fi system (installed in the wall ala 1960's technology), Besa block interior walls for homely texture (nice smokey shade of yellow), kids arcade ride on car (complete with power cord but no power point in sight)
