We stayed (2 adults, 1 child aged 12) at the Mercure in Queenstown last week. After reading the comments at Trip Advisor, we upgraded to a renovated lake view room (luckily one was available). Our stay was very pleasant. The room and bathroom were lovely. I feel the cold and when I rang Reception, they brought up a heater. Everyone was very helpful and the room was always beautifully made up when we returned from skiing each day. We had breakfast in the restaurant 4 of the 5 days we stayed. The breakfast was pretty average and I would have liked actual fresh fruit rather than fruit in juice, but for $18 (a special at the moment) and free for kids (eating with an adult), it did the job and meant we could go straight to the snow afterwards, rather than trying to find somewhere for breakfast.
Vista Restaurant, on the other hand, was excellent. We ate at a lot of places in Queenstown (most of the top ones on Trip Advisor) and, to be honest, the food at Vista was of a similar, if not better, standard. We had the steak, salmon, chicken parmigiana, vegetable lasagne, calamari (over a couple of sittings!) and they were all brilliant and very reasonable priced.

Room tip: Try and get a renovated, lakeview room.

I stayed here with my Mum while visiting Queenstown. The room was fairly spacious and modern, with fantastic views of the lake. The bathroom was perhaps a little dated, but nothing to be concerned about. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk mostly uphill from the town centre and shops, or a very short drive with plenty of free hotel parking available. I enjoyed the walk up the hill with the views, but others (like my Mum) might not appreciate the hill climb. The pool looked alright but in March it was way too cold to contemplate using it. I would definitely stay here again

Room tip: Top Floor with lake views was amazing

We stayed here for a couple of nights during a short tour of the South Island. We chose this hotel because it was family friendly, had free parking and because of the views. I had asked for one of the refurbished Lake View rooms and we were delighted to find that the view from the bed had an uninterrupted view of the stunning Lake Wakatipu and framed by the famous mountains behind. Our room was modern and the beds very comfortable, with a good sized fridge. No toaster which would have been a welcome addition and which other hotels do seem to offer nowadays, but the full breakfast on offer in the restaurant more than made up for it. The reception staff were very helpful in advising that booking breakfast in advance came with a significant discount, and there was also an offer in June for free in-room Wi-Fi when you signed up for club membership, which we were delighted about because the lack of free (or reasonably priced) Wi-Fi was the one thing which had given us pause about the hotel when making the reservation. There were minor technical difficulties with accessing the Wi-Fi initially as they had just installed a new system, but staff were very helpful and once we got it working it was fantastic and meant we could stay in touch and even get a little work done while away. The hotel has a wonderful pool, though being winter and unheated it was far too cold, but the spa was a welcome feature. It's would be a bit of a hike into town if you don't have a car, especially on the way back which would be uphill for some of the way, but there is a public bus service which passes the hotel around every 10 - 15 minutes which was $6 for a return trip if you say you are staying at the hotel, reception have copies of the timetable to give to guests. We just loved Queenstown and will definitely be back. Some of the things we did which we would recommend were dinner at Flames restaurant (South African style food), best ribs I have had in ages - be warned the portions are large, cruise of the lake, Below Zero Ice Bar - which was very different and fun and our 13 year old thought it was just great. The Mercure Queenstown has great refurbished rooms so be sure to ask for one if available, especially one with a lake view - definitely worth paying a bit extra for, some parts of the hotel are a little tired, but we were only there for the evenings and breakfast so it did not bother us at all. A great place to stay which is reasonably priced, we would definitely stay here again.

Room tip: It is worth paying a bit extra for a Superior Lake View Room and asking for one which has been refurbished.

We found this hotel to be good value and well priced considering the time of year (snow season and school holidays).

Pros:
-very, very friendly staff.
-beautiful views.
-free parking.
-large rooms.
-affordable nightly rate.
-closish to town.

Cons:
-no free wifi (offer wifi in the lobby for 30 mins).
-rooms are very dated.
-rooms are very large, though bathrooms are small (you sit on the toilet and the door touches your knees).
-shower curtains -- hattteeee them - ineffective, disgusting and so not 2014.
-parking is limited.

Enjoyed our stay and would recommend our stay to others!
