This was our second trip to the South Island and had already done the big tourist icons, Mount Cook, Milford Sound, Dunedin, Fox and Franz Joseph glaciers etc. People said to us, don't worry about Invercargill, not much down there. They couldn't have been more wrong. We found the Queens Park motel from the AA accommodation guide. Lovely quiet location away from the noisy main thoroughfares (most accommodation is on busy Tay Street). Your neighbors are a school oval and the glorious Queen's Park. After unpacking take the back gate and explore the park - the golf course, free bird aviary and animal farm, the i-centre with museum and a display of live ancient tatura lizards (so can also see these after hours through the glass wall from the park). Invercargill is a surprising city. Good shopping and great base for daytrips to Bluff for the oysters, Stewart Island and the Caitlins scenic drive. We were going to stay two nights, but extended to four. Owners are very helpful with ideas on where to go and what to see. We had a studio, which was okay for the two of us with basic kitchen. One bedroom for not much more looked roomy when I peeped in.
Room Tip: Check out the rooms to guage size needs. All good.
