Firstly if you're interested to book this property, email your query to the owners directly and do not just go by the online booking. When we checked the rates online it was much higher compared to what was quoted by the owners via email. As we had 3 young children with us the auto rate calculator added extra for more than 2 people but when we emailed the owners they quoted a straight per room rate that was lower. We were happy to deal with the owners via email and they provided good and prompt service. However when we arrived at the motel, we didn't get the opportunity to meet the owners as they were on holidays but their caretaker, Alan, did a wonderful job standing in for them! And this for someone who does it only occasionally for the owners.
The Euro motel was our first stop from our international flight arrival and we were very pleased they could accommodate our early arrival, which we certainly needed to help with our jet lag. We did however request this in advance.
We stayed in the one bedroom apartment no. 105 that faced the neighbouring building, also part of the Euro motel, so we had the blinds in our room down partially for privacy. This neighbouring building housed the reception on the ground floor and has a flight of steps to climb to get to the rooms. The building we were in did however have lifts from ground floor level so be sure to specify room with lift access if you need it.
Our apartment had a well appointed king size bedroom that was very comfortable and a free portacot with linen set up in the bedroom for our baby. In the lounge/living area two comfortable single beds were set up separately for our other two children. We did not have a room with a balcony but I believe it's because our room was bigger to accommodate the extra two single beds. Even with this set up, plus equipped kitchenette with fridge, freezer, dishwasher, m/wave, stove, etc, the apartment felt spacious enough and bright, and one we were very happy to return to after each outing. The modern shower room had full laundry facilities and again was nice and bright. There was a SKY TV and DVD player (in the lounge at least) in the bedroom and the lounge, which was great as the kids could be easily entertained when indoors. For a motel this place far exceeded our expectation and easily outdoes its hotel competitors. We really felt we were in a very good, comfortable apartment and not just a motel.
As mentioned by other reviewers, the views from the motel were not the best BUT the location is fantastic. We were right in the middle of the retail centre of Dunedin, which meant shopping and food were aplenty. The Dunedin railway, Cadbury Factory, supermarkets and Octagon were an easy, relatively flat 10 to 15 minutes walk away (and Dunedin is a very hilly place!). In warm, sunny weather this doesn't matter (which was how the weather was during our stay) but in wet, winter days I would be thrilled to not have to walk far for food, shopping and other activities.
Our only negative comment was that the utilities room on the ground floor next to the lift be kept tidied as during our stay, the door to this room was always open and had a number things out of place and gave us an impression that the cleaners did not tidy up after use. Other than that the apartment itself was clean and beds/towels refreshed daily.
We would definitely stay again at the Euro Motel if ever in Dunedin and happy to base ourselves here for a city centre stay or even if visiting the Otago Peninsula. Highly recommended. Thanks to Alan for his warm welcome and hospitality! Nothing was ever to small for him to attend to.
