“Great value for money, homely place - we'd stay there again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2011

We overnighted at this hotel and it suited our needs perfectly. The room was a good size and clean, the bed was comfy, the shower good and the location is great. Breakfast was plain but ample and all we wanted or needed and the off-street parking was very handy. We didn't hear any outside/street noise.
Some of the electrics in the room seemed a little dodgy and the tv in the lounge was awkward to watch but these things didn't bother us.

“Great Hotel - top value - worth staying”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 April 2011

Stayed one night. Booking in was easy. Room maybe a little small but if you have stayed in a hotel in Japan it was large by comparison .Room was quiet and well appointed. Free use of adjoining public car park. Location was great - only 5 mins walk to centre of Dunedin. Included breakfast consisted of toast + cereal. More than generous given the price for the room. Would stay again.

“Case of the Missing Cheese”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 April 2010

A minor mishap revealed an unfortunate management attitude. An hour after checking out, I returned to the George Street to recover an item I had left in the refrigerator - a full factory wrapped round of cheese in a gift box that I had intended to present to a chef friend ($30). It was gone without at trace. A thorough good natured search by staff revealed nothing but a faint piquant scent. The desk staff insisted on calling the manager and gave the phone to me. I explained the problem as good naturedly as possible, expecting the usual bland apology since nothing could be done. Instead I received a heated dressing down about how i needed to be more careful and that the hotel certainly couldn't be held responsible for items left behind. Ep! Obviously a missing cheese changes no one's life, but what if it had been a lap top or a suitcase? It was implied than if you left anything behind - tough luck. Methinks this hotel is too cheesy for me.

“Very disappointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2009

Very poor experience with this hotel.
- Lovely furniture in the rooms, but very small.
- There was no crockery or cutlery apart from tea cups and teaspoons. This meant the microwave was a total waste of space.
- The wheel chair accessable bathroom was so poorly designed that the entire floor was covered with water after every shower, requiring two towels to dry it up afterwards.
- The bottom sheet on the bed had yellow stains.
- There was no top sheet.
- The duvet had no cover whatsoever.
- The 2 electronic door keys took around a dozen trys and several frustrating minutes every time I wanted to get back into the room.
- I put the "do not disturb" sign on my door handle, only to have someone knock and ask if I wanted my room cleaned. This was EXTREMELY upsetting as my partner and I were naked on the bed at the time, and the room was so tiny that if the door had been opened we would have been in full view of anyone in the hallway.
- There were no glasses in the dining room at breakfast time, so I went to reception and rang the bell. Twice. No one came. I wondered around looking for someone, came across the hotel bar in another room and helped myself to a glass.

I'm very disappointed and rather angry, as this place is advertised as luxury accomodation and has matching prices, which are not at all deserved.

“Gracious old home transformed into modern comfort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 May 2009

We loved the ambience of this brick and tile lodge. Close to all restaurants and with a lovely garden. Rooms were perfect with extremely comfy beds. This lodge only caters for a limited number so it is cosy and intimate. The whole building was beautifully warm on a cold pre winter's night. Staff were thoughtful and accommodating. Breakfast was enjoyed in the morning room that still had the feel of a gracious home. Will visit again!
