“Excellent location”

This hotel in an excellent location. The first room was not too good had paid for a Kind bed superior room but the room had a queen bed and was very small. I spoke with reception and was given a free upgrade to a beautiful suite which made such a difference to us as we had booked for 3 nights. The restaurant food excellent the staff excellent

“Faulty towers”

We stayed here during the world cup. The hotel is in an old building totally unsuitable for a hotel. First stay was ok, second stay was appalling, in a room obviously a single into which they had pushed a double bed, a lift that doesn't reach all floors and doesn't work most of the time as the doors weren't shut. After a sleepless night they moved us. Most of the staff were good. We had booked and paid for the room 12 months before hoping to get decent accommodation. This has been taken up with the company directly

“Warm comfy beds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

We stayed one night and found it was very comfortable and enjoyable, the meals were nice, not a lot of choice for breakfast but adequate. Staff were friendly and very helpful. They stored the bags after check out when we went on the Taieri Gorge train for the day and when we picked up our car after when we returned it was brought to the door for us.Location was close enough to walk to the station about 15mins.

“Tired and disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

As my first review I am disappointed that it has to be negative in nature.

I travel a great deal for both work and vacation across Canada, US, Australia, New Zealand & Europe.

I am currently on a combination of work/holiday in New Zealand and absolutely love the country. While accommodations and prices have varied from Auckland to Queenstown to Wellington (loved the Museum Hotel) to Dunedin, this hotel is one of the worst I have stayed at in a very long time.

Now, the booking was made for me by the group I am working with and the room rate was only $114 - that should have been a hint. But the size of the room, quality (or lack thereof) of the furnishings and view of another storage room facing me about 10 metres away was very disappointing.

After going for a short walk to try and find something to eat, I returned looking forward to a hot shower. Unfortunately the nozzle would not stay up and I was going to have to hold it in one hand. I called to have it repaired and the Night Manager came up herself. She tried and was unable to fix it.

I asked about how I could turn down the heat - sorry, no controls - but there is a floor fan.

Now the positive, the Night Manager was very apologetic and asked what she could do to help. We settled on her waiving the $29 internet fee (wired only) which was nice.

So, bottom line, the hotel, while centrally located is beyond tired. I stay in older hotels all the time (often Fairmont’s) and like the character of them. This was not that.

“Rooms are an afterthought”

Stayed for one night. Our bedroom had a fire escape ladder bolted into the wall of our bedroom. This led up 6 rungs to a window that could not open onto the fire escape. The person on the floor above and across from us had a great view down into our bedroom. Shower had nowhere to place toiletries, the quick repair silicone in the shower is yellowing and peeling. The manual lift is quaint but not practical. Does not stop at all floors. Our friends had to carry their cases up three floors to the old servants quarters. No wardrobe and no space to swing a kitten let alone a cat! Our friends were upgraded once they complained. Seems they got our prison cell with the concreted in wall ladder in the bedroom! I would NEVER stay here again
