“Amazing old building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2011

This place was a great change to all the other backpackers we had stayed in across NZ. This old hospital make a great backpackers. We stayed in the apartment which had its own bathroom and kitchen and had 1 bedroom with 1 double and 1 single bed. The place was clean and we were glad there was a heater in our room as, even in summer, it was a little cool. It was a 20 minute walk to town but the YHA provides a walking tour brochure which makes for a fascinating stroll into the centre of town. Limited free parking and parking on the street.

Quite dated and old. Clean but could really do with a spruce up. Kitchen was nice and big. Internet room was quiet so perfect for skyping. Staff were very friendly and helpul. Overall it was fine but it didn't blow me away by any means

“Booked for one night stayed for five”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2010

I loved this hostel! After having stayed at a few not so good (non-YHA) hostels I fell in love with this place. I stayed in a six bed dorm on the top floor and it was a nice sized room with no bunk beds (apparently the other six bed dorm had 2 bunks and 2 single beds and less room).

The kitchen was very well equipped with two toasters, two sandwich makers, two ovens, two microwaves, four cooking hobs (totalling 16 single hobs), loads of cutlery, mugs, glasses, crockery, pots and pans. I have also never seen a kitchen so clean! I don't know how this was kept so clean but it was as though all the backpackers ensured that it stayed stunningly clean. The kitchen was also closed for cleaning every day from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.

There was adequate heating in the hostel, and room heating could be put on as and when you liked... and it was on an hour timer each time you switched it on, but there was nothing to stop you getting up and putting it back on again.

The bathroom on the top floor didnt have the best of showers, but it was a largish room and not the normal style of backpacing bathrooms so I found it nice to have room to spread out. The showers on the 1st floor were much better and not attached permanantly to the wall which was a bonus for me.

The view from the roof was great, you can see all across the city... although it is not the prettiest towns to look out upon.

It is close to Speights Brewary Tour (about 5 mins) and about a 10 minute walk to the main part of town. Although on the way back the last part of the walk is uphill to get to the hostel which is not so good, but it is not too far up.

I read a comment about a lone single female not being happy about walking back in the dark, I did on several nights and never felt threatened or had any problems so don't let that comment put you off if you are a solo female traveller.

Staff at the hostel were friendly and helpful too :)

If you get a bit cold at night you can also borrow a hot water bottle from reception :) But they also ensure there are loads of blankets in the rooms too :)

The only negative thing about this hostel was that I liked it so much I found ti hard to leave!

“Cosy hostel but bit of a trek from town!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2010

This hostel was cosy enough, the rooms are small but the hostel is quiet so slept brilliantly, downside is its a bit of a trek from town and its at the top of a hill! Facilities were clean, staff were friendly and the hostel was lovely and warm (it was winter!)

“A bit of a trek from town”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2010

The 5 bed female dorm we stayed in was very spacious, but bunks were creaky and had possibly the thinnest mattress I've ever tried to sleep on - not very comfy that's for sure!

The bathrooms were clean and the showers ok, but there weren't enough of them: just 3 showers for the entire floor.

Kitchen was clean and spacious and there were two dining rooms to sit in. I know it's out of the hostel's control, but I wasn't too impressed that someone stole Special K from our brand new unopened box which we labelled and put in the storage area in the kitchen!

It's a bit of a way out of town, and the road its on is probably not one you'd want to walk up on your own late at night, but we didn't have any problems.
