We stayed in Christchurch in between train trips (Tranz Coastal from Picton, Tranz Alpine to Greymouth) so we just had a quick overnight stay. The Ibis was perfect for our stay, very central with the Ibis formula of clean modern rooms without the frills. It was very close to the city centre with quite a few bars/restaurants outside the hotel so if you wanted a quiet location, this is probably not the one. However, I feel that all this is a bit academic right now as the tragic earthquake means that no-one is taking holidays in Christchurch right now. We hope that one day they will be back and open for business.

Small but clean room in city, (a fairly small hotel). Walking distance to museums and shops. Good range for breakfast. The room also had air conditioning.

stayed for 3 nights split into 2 stays. Hotel within easy walking distance of major car hire offices. Good choice of eateries along Oxford Terrace and hotel food good-- ate both steak and fish -- both cooked well. Room had 2 queen beds so felt a little cramped and lighting in the room a bit dull. generally felt a little dated but small shower room quite modern in comparison. Very helpful reception staff but not so impressed with the female restaurant manager on duty on our last night. Overall would recommend as a city centre stop over.
