“Fabulous”

Otahuna is a one-of-a-kind travel experience. My wife and I have never stayed at such a splendid accommodation in all our travels. It is, as one travel publication says, "not for the budget conscious." The accommodations are beyond luxurious. Our room, the Veranda Suite, was huge, comfortable, and contained virtually anything one could imagine desiring (including two fireplaces, one in the bathroom!) The food, and wine, are outstanding and plentiful. The gardens are splendid. Service is exceptional. Dinner, which is included along with breakfast in the fee is five courses, each with wine.

The house itself is of historical and architectural importance and interest. There are a number of attractive options and amenities available, including a hot tub, use of bikes (and good bikes, at that), etc.

My only concern is that Otahuna may have spoiled me for any other lodging hereafter!!!

Room Tip: All were excellent, as far as I could tell.

Attentive owners, wonderful accomodation and a totally urbane and civilised environment. Thoroughly recommended. Chef a genius.

“Understated Elegance”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

Otahuna Lodge is a unique property in one of the most beautiful settings. I was blown away by the understated elegance present throughout the property - including in the Rhodes Suite, which I was lucky to call my home away from home.

It is the perfect combination of history, luxury and modernity. Throughout my stay, I was equally amazed by the quality of service and warmth that the staff greeted me with. Each evening I was delighted with a tasty five-course meal that was presented with stellar New Zealand wines, which was included in the price of my stay. The garden tour is another 'can't miss' and it's easy to find your own corner of the grounds to escape with a good book.

My experience at Otahuna made the long trip to New Zealand from the US worth it and I'm sure that I will be back!

Room Tip: Each of the seven suites at Otahuna have their own character and unique flair. Do research or call t...

“Height of Luxury”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 May 2011

My girlfriend and I stayed at Otahuna at the end of our trip to the southern Island in January of 2011 and it was the perfect ending to an amazing vacation. Hall Cannon and Miles Refo, the owners, have created a retreat that is luxurious and grand, yet, you feel at home and comfortable at the same time. The staff is attentive but not in your face and every little detail is thought through, from dinner with regional wine pairings to chocolate covered strawberries on your bedside after turn down service along with a small anecdote of the history of the lodge. Head chef, Jimmy McIntyre's food is amazing. And not only is his food wonderful but he will cater your dinner to your tastes depending on preferences and/or allergies and almost everything is produced from the stock and gardens maintained on the property. The property as well as the lodge itself is impeccably maintained. If fact, while taking a tour of the extensive and beautiful grounds, I actually proposed to my now fiance. I felt it was the perfect setting but could not have guessed at how amazing the staff would be. Mr. Cannon and Refo, immediately took pictures for us to remember it by and had the staff open a bottle of bubbly to celebrate. They truly made an exciting moment in our lives, even more special. If we did not have such an extensive family, we would have eagerly considered holding our wedding at the lodge but hopefully we will be able to go back someday as this is truly a special place.

“Heaven on Earth”

This place is pure luxury without being pretencious. We atayed hereas part of our 2 week honeymoon in NZ and it was definitely the best place we stayed. The staff were amazing after a horrible trip with delayed flights, missed connections diversions and finally no luggage for 3 days the staff made sure we had the necessary toiletrieswhen we arrived to freshen ourselves up. They also offered to lend us some jackets the follwing day to keep us warm as we only had the clothes we had travelled in. The food was amazing and all grown out of their garden, the wines were matched to the food and the knowledge was fantastic. The rooms were gorgeous with a freestanding bath and beautiful antiques. The lodge has been restored beautifully and would one day love to return to this place that made our honeymoon.
