This place is exactly what you come to expect of Base hostels in NZ. The buy the best locations and then run them into the ground with low hygene standards and poor housekeeping.
The beds are terrible, old and basic. The room decor hasnt seen a lick of paint in 50 years and the ensuite showers aren't clean, let alone the communal areas. The bar is drak and dingy and typically overpriced (thats another Base thing).
James on the front desk was spot on, coincidentley he was working for STA in Oz when we booked our KiwiExperience (which was awesome), so him being there was the only positive attribute in the hostel.
We did stay here when we came back around from our travels of the South Island, but purely because it was a guaranteed bed from KiwiExperience and it was only for 1 night and we knew we were leaving at 8am the next day.

The hostel boasts the best location in Christchurch on Cathedral Sq - very convenient if you are joining or leaving a tour on the South Island. However, the hostel is not very clean and very run down. The elevator is from B.C. and the toilet and shower facilities were rarely cleaned. One shower stall was missing a lock and pointing it out didnt seem to change that even as we returned a week later. The bar is very small, but hosts good parties.

What really bugged about this hostel was that the continental breakfast cost 9$(!) ... exactly the same breakfast that costs 6$ at Base in Auckland.... hmm...

If you want value for money, then this backpacking accommodation is HEAVEN!

Located a stone away from Christchurch Center - being strategically placed, restaurants, bus stops, food, etc. is within reach.

I know with backpacker hostels you get what you pay for, but this was gross!
I've never had a shower where once I've washed I come out feeling unclean. The showers were dirty, the toilets hadnt been cleaned and the sanitary bin was overflowing! Even after we complained to reception it still didn't get done.
If you want a relatively quiet night as for the 2nd and above floors, the bar downstairs plays until late. Your feet will stick to the floor in there so watch out!
The receptionists were very helpful with check in & out & travel info.
The room was bug enough for 5 people but with one tiny window it's stank!
But to avoid this, go next door but one to the hotel and haggle a price and they will do a deal. The rooms are massive and clean!
Bingo! Worst base ever!
