“Great Location, on site Restaurant fantastic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2011

My partner and I stayed at Rydges Christchurch approximately 6 weeks after the first earthquake in 2010. We were a little confused when we first arrived as we had driven from the airport and had no where to park the car on the street while we checked in. I ended up checking in while my husband went around the block a couple of times until we had instructions to park in the public car park adjoining the hotel. Parking rates were great for our overnight stay, and the car park attendant advised the opening hours of the car park so we knew when we could collect our car.
Checkin was quick and the staff were very friendly. We got a great rate on the room being part of their loyalty club and also being government employees also gave us an extra discount. At the time of booking, we had booked for a king size bed, but when we got to the room we ended up with two doubles. We didn't make a complaint as we were only staying there one night, not really a big deal. The hotel room had a crack going down an entire wall, again, not really concerned since there was an earthquake only 6 weeks before and the crack only looked superficial.

We ate dinner at the resaturant on site, and the food was magnificant, we didn't need to make a booking. We were so impressed we also took the buffet breakfast the next morning ahead of our drive to Mount Cook.

The room was clean and tidy, the bed setup was a bit disappointing but comfortable. There was a group of school/sports kids on our floor but we didn't hear them all night, and our room faced the road but we couldn't hear any traffic, we were on the 3rd floor.

Would definitely stay again but for a longer visit I would have definitely asked to switch room type to what we had booked. I'm a pretty easy going customer so I'm sure this would annoy other people.

Location of the hotel relative to the main CBD is fantastic, only one block away from the city centre.

“Disappointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 April 2011

Feel bad about writing this as the hotel is in the CBD. Joined the Privilege Club for discounts in food and drinks but they don;t give them for breakfasts - doesn't everyone want breakfast!? Also expensive to use Wifi or broadband - why can't hotels let you use the Wifi for free if you only want to e-mail or check something.

Dear Jan,
Thank you for your feedback, the hotel has been out of operation for 7 weeks, your comments will certainly be food for thought for all of our team while we unknowingly wait direction as to when we may re-open or gain access to the hotel.
The main reason breakfast is not incuded in the 20% food and beverage discount our Priority guests are entitled to is because breakfast is discounted everyday when you book a breakfast inclusive rate online.
As mentioned in a number of the below responses, WIFI is free with purchase in the hotel Restaurant and Bar.
Thanks again for your feedback, your title certainly has merit.
Rob.

“Rydges CHC lacks the ammenities/facilities to justify itself being a 5 Star Hotel.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 March 2011

We had gone a 12-day family vacation to New Zealand and spent two nights at Rydges Christchurch in two different rooms because they were totally sold out for the Regular City View Rooms, inspite of us having a valid booking receipt. On the first day we were alloted an executive room on the topmost Floor and the next day we were shifted to another room. When they had a valid booking, they should not have alloted the room to someone else. Un-packing & then again re-packing is a tedious affair.

The Reception was very unimpressive and looked like some make-shift arrangement. The staff were over-loaded with work pressure and hence they were less attentive and they ended-up handing over the room keys (cards) which would'nt open the doors to our rooms. I spent close to one and half hours to get the cards sorted out for both our rooms as they rooms alloted to us were both at the extreme ends of the same floor and not adjoining to each other.

The Hotel neither has a Gym, nor a swimming pool. They don't even give you car parking facilities. There is a car parking facility just next to the Hotel's building and you have to pay NZ Dollar 15 for 12 Hours. The Hotel Charges more for valet parking. The Indonesian Gentleman at the Concierge was courteous though and he helped us wih the luggage.

On the positive aspect was the location and the close proximity to the Cathedral which is just behind the Hotel and few minutes walk from the left hand side lane of the Hotel. The punting upon Avon is just across the road and the tram stops very close to the Hotel. Money Changers and Convenient Stores are all around on both the lanes beside the Hotel. The rooms are not quite spacious, though decently clean enough. The breakfast was sumptous.

Hotel Camelot Cathedral has the same locational advantage and is lighter on the pocket. Rydges Christchurch lacks the basic features and ammenities to justify the 5 Star status.

Thank you for your feedback. Rydges Christchurch is not a 5 star hotel it is 4.5. This along with all of our amenities and services is clearly offered on ours and all 3rd party websites on which we feature including this site on which you have chosen to review. While disappointing it is somewhat surprising that it took your arrival to the Hotel to realize, particularly on a 12 day trip. Gym facilities while not on site, are offered free of charge in the adjacent building.
Your issue with room allocations is disappointing, I would appreciate any specific info you could offer on your reservation for follow up. I do not recall your booking being brought to my attention at property level but would like to confirm what end errors were made to improve future stays.
The reception desks were upgraded in October to improve interaction between guests and staff, many of our regular guests have been very approving of the changes, it is unfortunate that they do not appeal to your tastes.
I do find your final remarks somewhat confusing. Given your preference for a 5 star experience, your recommendation of one of our competitors is really quite surprising. The 2 properties are vastly different in service concepts and quality, convincingly shown by comparison on this website.
Regards,
Rob.

“Adequate but disappointing facilities and housekeeping”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 March 2011

Larger business type hotel well located for the centre of Christchurch. Although the overall standard was acceptable, the hotel was let down by poor standards of housekeeping in the room where there was a thick layer of dust covering many of the furniture surfaces (suggesting that only linens and bathrooms were fully serviced by Housekeeping). In addition, the hotels suffers from very poor wireless internet access with many rooms apparently unable to receive access. Access seems only to be consistently available in the lobby area and then at an excessive charge. For a hotel seemingly targeting the business market, this is an unacceptable level of service provision.

Despite the above comments, front of house staff were helpful and friendly.

Hotel cleanliness is of the utmost importance and it is disappointing that you have found issues with our standards. Housekeeping is responsible for the entire hotel room from top to bottom. Our feedback in these areas is usually very good so I feel that while unacceptable, it was nevertheless an isolated case. Wireless Internet at present is only available on the executive floor and the ground floor which would explain your connectivity issues. This is clearly outlined in our guest compendiums and our staff are available 24 hours to assist with any issues. Wireless On ground floor is free for 1/2 hour with purchase in the bar or restaurant and 50% of normal in Room charges otherwise. Rydges Christchurch is currently negotiating with our service provider to upgrade the entire hotel to wireless. I do agree that this is essential in meeting modern corporate needs and we look forward to this upgrade shortly.
Regards,
Rob.

“Great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2011

We stayed here in July 2009. Great location, right in Christchurch CBD. Lovely hotel, will definately stay here again. And Starbucks is just around the corner! Only gripe is paying for parking which is pricey.

Thank you for your feedback. It is unfortunate that we are at the mercy of the local council with regards to parking. The hotel is not provided with any discounting which is disappointing as we would surely pass these on to our guests.
Rydges Christchurch certainly is one of the best located of all Christchurch hotels. Right in the heart of the arts precinct and along the popular restaurant strip overlooking the Avon River, Rydges is perfectly positioned to take in all Christchurch has to offer.
