My partner and I stayed at Rydges Christchurch approximately 6 weeks after the first earthquake in 2010. We were a little confused when we first arrived as we had driven from the airport and had no where to park the car on the street while we checked in. I ended up checking in while my husband went around the block a couple of times until we had instructions to park in the public car park adjoining the hotel. Parking rates were great for our overnight stay, and the car park attendant advised the opening hours of the car park so we knew when we could collect our car.
Checkin was quick and the staff were very friendly. We got a great rate on the room being part of their loyalty club and also being government employees also gave us an extra discount. At the time of booking, we had booked for a king size bed, but when we got to the room we ended up with two doubles. We didn't make a complaint as we were only staying there one night, not really a big deal. The hotel room had a crack going down an entire wall, again, not really concerned since there was an earthquake only 6 weeks before and the crack only looked superficial.
We ate dinner at the resaturant on site, and the food was magnificant, we didn't need to make a booking. We were so impressed we also took the buffet breakfast the next morning ahead of our drive to Mount Cook.
The room was clean and tidy, the bed setup was a bit disappointing but comfortable. There was a group of school/sports kids on our floor but we didn't hear them all night, and our room faced the road but we couldn't hear any traffic, we were on the 3rd floor.
Would definitely stay again but for a longer visit I would have definitely asked to switch room type to what we had booked. I'm a pretty easy going customer so I'm sure this would annoy other people.
Location of the hotel relative to the main CBD is fantastic, only one block away from the city centre.
