We stayed in this hotel on our honeymoon for two nights whilst touring NZ. We have stayed in many excellent Copthornes, notably the one in Auckland, and had great faith in the brand. This hotel is not cheap by NZ standards but we were happy to pay, and to stump up for a superior room, as we were there for the last two nights of our honeymoon and thought it would be a good hotel.
On arrival we were greeted by a young man who was very pleasant but seemed to have little idea of his job. We had heavy bags and he did not offer us any help with them on the long walk to our room.
We were disappointed by our room. It was divided into a bedroom and a sitting room with a dividing wall but both rooms were very small and there was little storage space. Worst of all the room had no built in air conditioning. There was a single plug in unit (for two rooms) which provided very little cool air and certainly didn't adequately cool two rooms in 28 degree heat. There was no extractor fan in the bathroom, which really didn't improve the situation.
I explored the room to find a fridge with a small selection of drinks and no price list, so rang reception to find out if they were complimentary or if we were just missing a price list. A different young man rather crossly said that of course they weren't complimentary and seemed to be blaming me for the lack of a price list in our room. He rattled off the prices and did not offer to bring the list over. I asked him for a code for the Internet and he very quickly and unclearly gave one. I asked him to repeat it, which he did with a very bad grace and again unclearly.
Our room was too hot to sleep in despite the air conditioning unit that night.
Then worse was to come when we returned very late at night on the second day to find that our room had not been made up. I spoke to a man on reception and asked him to leave fresh towels outside our room, then woke the next day to find that he hadn't bothered! I spoke to a woman on reception who did kindly bring us some towels. No one seemed greatly interested in the fact that our room had inexplicably not been made up.
I should however commend the young man on reception who lent me scissors and Sellotape to wrap a present and was generally very helpful.
