“Not up to Copthorne standards”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

We stayed in this hotel on our honeymoon for two nights whilst touring NZ. We have stayed in many excellent Copthornes, notably the one in Auckland, and had great faith in the brand. This hotel is not cheap by NZ standards but we were happy to pay, and to stump up for a superior room, as we were there for the last two nights of our honeymoon and thought it would be a good hotel.

On arrival we were greeted by a young man who was very pleasant but seemed to have little idea of his job. We had heavy bags and he did not offer us any help with them on the long walk to our room.

We were disappointed by our room. It was divided into a bedroom and a sitting room with a dividing wall but both rooms were very small and there was little storage space. Worst of all the room had no built in air conditioning. There was a single plug in unit (for two rooms) which provided very little cool air and certainly didn't adequately cool two rooms in 28 degree heat. There was no extractor fan in the bathroom, which really didn't improve the situation.

I explored the room to find a fridge with a small selection of drinks and no price list, so rang reception to find out if they were complimentary or if we were just missing a price list. A different young man rather crossly said that of course they weren't complimentary and seemed to be blaming me for the lack of a price list in our room. He rattled off the prices and did not offer to bring the list over. I asked him for a code for the Internet and he very quickly and unclearly gave one. I asked him to repeat it, which he did with a very bad grace and again unclearly.

Our room was too hot to sleep in despite the air conditioning unit that night.

Then worse was to come when we returned very late at night on the second day to find that our room had not been made up. I spoke to a man on reception and asked him to leave fresh towels outside our room, then woke the next day to find that he hadn't bothered! I spoke to a woman on reception who did kindly bring us some towels. No one seemed greatly interested in the fact that our room had inexplicably not been made up.

I should however commend the young man on reception who lent me scissors and Sellotape to wrap a present and was generally very helpful.

Thank you for your reveiw of our hotel.I am sorry that you did not like the room you were assigned,if any of our guests are unhappy we will always try to offer them an alternative as we realize every body is different and we all do not like the same things. At this stage the hotel does not have aircon or advertise that we do,however we are in the process of adding aircon for next year.I am also sorry that your room was not serviced, however our room attendants will not entry while our guests have the privacy card out and unfortunatly this was still out at 5pm when the last of our cleaning staff left.
When you rang for a service at near 2am i had to inform you that this service was no longer possible at this late hour. However I personaly left 2 towels outside your room shortly after 2am after knocking at your door and was unable to get your attention.I did not think it prudent to ring as you may have been asleep.Unfortunatly the towels seem to have gone missing by the time you checked,i apologise for this.I am pleased you found the young man pleasant on arrival as he has been here for six years and is our assistant manager, and he wishes to apologise if he did not offer you a hand with your bags as it is his normal practice, but as it was a night that we were full he can only gather that he had to attend to another urgent request. We are only a small hotel with 30 rooms and as such maybe lack extra avalible staff in times of high demand, but we make up this this(we believe) in great hospitality and would have loved to meet you over a drink in the bar.

“Quiet and relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

Staff were really helpful, as we were staying Christmas eve they let us know that the restaurant would not be open for breakfast on Christmas day and offered us a continental breakfast basket instead. The room was nice and cool even though the weather was very hot. Also nice and close to Pollard park

“Exceeded expectations”

Didn't really have any idea of what to expect from this hotel. We booked a standard room at a good rate, almost went for a superior room but in the end we were very happy with the standard room.

The staff at reception were most helpful for my partner who had developed a blister from our walking around, one of them even had a dressing specifically for blisters. We enjoyed sitting near the reception area waiting for our wine tour, nice artworks around that area and in the room also.

Room was nice and big and very good condition. King bed. Sky Sports 1 and 2 which was great as this was the night that All Blacks played France and Warriors played Storm. Enough spare room in the fridge to fit in 3 bottles of local wine that we picked up.

Slightly outside of town centre, but really only a 10 minute leisurely walk or a 5 minute power walk.

“Noisy and overpriced”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2011

We booked and paid for two nights but had to move on the next day. They refused a refund for a nights accom or to move to return date so lost money. The reception was very rude and unheplful, was upsetting. Paper thin walls and no balcony.

Room Tip: Dont stay in Blenheim

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We are sorry that you did not like our Town,we would be happy to show you what Marlborough has to offer should you wish to return.
Our website advertises a fully flexible rate and a super saver rate that is non refundable.the flexible rate is able to be cancelled up to 24 hours before the day of stay. Unfortunately we are unable to refund a super saver room on the day of stay.
While our hotel does not have any rooms with balconies it does have rooms with access to our internal garden for our smoking guests,I am sorry that swapping your original room for one of the above did not meet with your expectations.
We take seriously the issue of customer service and I have spoken to the person on the front counter on the morning of your departure and she did tell me that she feels she could have delivered the message about a refund with better tact.We have since your review had further staff training and procedures on handling delicate matters which we feel will offer a better outcome to our valued guests.I would like to add that should any of our guests have any issues while staying at our hotel.I am always available to discuss any matter and only to happy to meet your needs if at all possible.
