We stayed at the Central Stratford for about a week. We had a really nice time and the location was fantastic. The airport shuttle bus stops about a block away and once you're there, you can walk almost anywhere in town. We took a total of 2 buses the whole time we were there: one out to Miramar to see Weta Cave and one to the top of Mt. Victoria (because we were much too lazy to hike up it! ha ha ha). That's it. Everything else was easily within walking distance; the waterfront, Te Papa, the cable car/botanic gardens, Parliament/Beehive, Cuba St., Film Archive, and on and on and on. There was even a really nice New World grocery store down the street, which enabled us to eat in a few times and save some money. The room (a one bedroom) was nicely appointed, with a good kitchenette, TV, CD player, and a combo washer/dryer. The washer worked well, but the dryer was nearly useless. It took 3 cycles to get clothes to damp (even with smaller loads than it recommended). Luckily we had an opening window with a railing that allowed us to dry clothes. Also, it was not a problem for us, but they DO NOT have a 24-hour reception so if you are planning on getting in at an odd hour, be sure to call ahead so that you can make special arrangements if necessary. After the reception closes, you have to use a key card to unlock the front door, which reception didn't mention upon check-in. Other than these minor quibbles, however, we had a great stay. The cleaning staff was very nice (and seemed almost shocked that we were nice to them!) and the room was comfy and well-appointed. Wellington was a wonderful town and the Central Stratford made for a great home base!
