Ridge Country Retreat must be one of the best kept secrets in NZ. The setting is incredible, hidden away amongst the native bush and looking over the rolling hills of Papamoa.

It is managed by Jo and Penny, two very warm and friendly hosts. They were absolutely fantastic from the moment we arrived. They built the resort from scratch and it was a pleasure to enjoy the heaven they created.

The rooms are huge, modern and luxurious. The king size beds are extremely comfortable and you will find it difficult to get out once you’ve gotten in, especially as the beds are situated to take advantage of the stunning views.

Each villa has a private balcony and outdoor bath, which is connected directly to the geothermal water from beneath the ground. Lying in the hot natural water underneath the stars is an experience I will never forget.

The facilities are simple but excellent. It is essentially a luxury B&B, although all meals are catered for. We had a private dinner on our first night, which at $80 each for a delicious four course meal was good value. Their chef was on leave at the time, so Jo and Penny cooked our meal. This worked out in our favour as they are both from a cooking/restaurant background so the meal was excellent.

We also had a superb breakfast each morning, which consisted of any combination of cereal, fresh fruit, yoghurt, eggs, bacon, toast, coffee/tea/juice etc, and if you are lucky homemade blueberry pancakes.

There is an outdoor pool, which like the baths, is connected to the geothermal water, so is filled with natural 34 degree water all day long. As soon as we arrived we jumped straight in and relaxed with a glass of champagne.

While the location is very secluded, it is only 10-15 minutes’ drive away from Mt Maunganui, which has a beautiful beach and plenty of beachfront cafes and restaurants. Other nearby areas include Papamoa and Tuaranga central, where there are more restaurants and plenty of shops etc,

Ridge Country Retreat is probably the most relaxing hotel/resort I have ever stayed at. It is perfect for couples of any age, but also caters for groups and weddings. If you are looking to get away from the world and completely unwind then this is the place for you.
