“what a nightmare”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

We have been to roturua and taupu so many times, most of the time I check reviews on trip advisor to select hotel or motel except this time, then it turns into a nightmare. I know that with hotel or motel at this price and cheaper, I would have a much pleasant stay. Additionally, we’ve been charged more! I would talk about it later.

I went to this motel simply because they have mineral pools. When we make a booking on the phone, we've been told that 25% deposit would be deducted from the credit card, which is different from the other hotel or motel. When we entered the room in arrival, we found that it's so average, totally different to their pictures on the website. I found that they forgot to refill the hand wash, but it's not a big deal. It’s a strange summer, it keeps rainy for over 2 weeks, and we felt a bit cold. So we turn on the heater. That’s the beginning of the nightmare. When I used the air dryer after shower, suddenly all the light gone. The same thing happened to my parents’ room, when I tried to use their hair dryer. My husband was having a shower so he had to stop and went to the reception to find the owner with half naked. It’s 9pm and they’ve already closed, after couple mins of knocking door the owner’s wife asked what’s happened behind the door. And my husband told them what’s going on. There was a long silence after that. So he kept knocking at the door again and this time the owner finally respond again and my husband had to repeat what’s happened in the room and told them he’s in the middle of shower so please help ASAP. Surprisingly the owner told us, all the lights will be timed and would turn off automatically, and told us “good night”! After my husband complained about the service, the owner did go to our rooms and solve the problem, after my husband standing outside the door and asking for helps for over 10 mins.

Everything seems fine again. We just wanted to boil some water, since one of the power plugs doesn’t work, so we change to another power plug, this time, it did work, however, all the light gone again! So I learned that with the heater’s on, you can’t use anything like air dryer or the boiler in the room, though we never experienced that in any other motels or hotels, the owner told us it’s a common sense in NZ.

At night, we found that the bed is so uncomfortable, we can't sleep well by changing positions. The opposite is that we can get up very early in the morning as you can’t sleep well.

The owner charge us NZ$149 for the stuido room with queen bed and mineral pool, however, what we got is a double bed with mineral bath, when I asked the owner's wife, she said that NZ$2 internet fee is free for us, I do appreciate that at that time, however, when I checked on the website after I return Auckland, I found out our room should be NZ$135 instead of NZ$149! I felt like I have been cheated. I did double check with the owner about the price when I made the booking, and asked them twice is it supposed to be a double bed and mineral bath?...

Definitely won't go again.

“Basic”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

We would not recommend for the following reasons:
-room was small and very basic
-the price is similar to others that are of a higher standard
-you are only given one key to the room and when we asked for another we were abruptly told no.
-the power went out and although we brought this to the owners attention he was abrupt and did not follow this up
-if we hadn't pre paid on arrival we would have left after the first night
-the shower has limited hot water and went cold after two short showers
-parking is limited and tiny, small spaces

“An enjoyable stay: great private tub, good view & clean room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

We spent two nights in the 2-room end unit closest to the lake (# 13, I think), and our views were very good. Our main room looked-out over the lake and over a park. This hotel isn't fancy, but it is very clean & we were very comfortable. We had a private balcony with a private hot mineral bath, and these were the highlight of our stay. I had to do some work while we were in Taupo, and the table in our unit was perfect: it's in a well-lit space with room to spread-out. Our unit had a fully-equipped kitchen (also with a view of the lake), and the furniture and linens were in good shape. It is apparent that renovations have been undertaken to modernize the facility.
The main heater in our room worked on a timer. We ended-up utilizing the stand-alone radiant heater in addition to the timed heater, and we were quite comfortable. We found the heater along with a number of amenities in the cupboards and closets.
I highly recommend that travelers view the room options prior to committing to a room. The studios were within the price range that we had in-mind, but when we saw the difference between them and the 2-room unit with the views and bath, we were very happy to spend the extra money.
While the owners seemed a bit cool at first, they were quite engaging the more we interacted with them.
We would happily return to this motel - if we could stay in the end unit closest to the lake.

Room Tip: View the different rooms before you choose! The studios are vastly inferior to the larger rooms. The...

“Basic motel but has a lovely private mineral bath”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2011

We stayed in a basic studio room which was clean and had everything we needed. The room is not modern, but then it's not as old as some of the 70's and 80's places you find in NZ. The room has had a flat screen TV added but you cannot watch it unless you sit right back on the be.

The mineral pool is awesome. Loved it.

Pet friendly which is nice.

The owner is kind of abrupt and grumpy to deal with but means well

Room Tip: Make sure you get a private mineral pool

“Missed opportunity”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2011

I agree with other reviewers - the reality was nothing like the website, and if I hadn't prepaid I wouldn't have stayed. Friendly owners, nice dog - I'm glad to hear that rennovations are underway. The unit was cosy once the curtains were drawn after dark, although both the bed and sofa had a lean on them which was uncomfortable.

We stayed in an upstairs unit, lured by the promise of a view, but this was only visible from the outside balcony - not a good idea in mid winter, and this was a big disappointment: the wall of the unit could have a large window added to take advantage of the site. The big problem was the stairs to the upper floor which were dangerously steep and narrow - I wondered if they meet safety requirements, and heard other guests complaining about them too.
