“Stunning views and luxurious accommodation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We've worked out that 'lodge' in NZ can mean very different things, from a modest but comfortable B and B to the grandest kind of resort hotel. Acacia Cliffs Lodge has something in common with both. It is located in the Acacia Bay area of Taupo, about 7 km from the town centre, has only 4 guest rooms on the ground floor and is run by a couple, Rick and Linda, who live on the second floor. The first floor is used for the guest lounge and dining room. For an additional charge, guests can eat in but sit at a single table. Thus far, fairly modest sounding. The devil is in the detail.

First of all, that location. You are high on the slope overlooking Acacia Bay and floor to ceiling windows give you a view from your bed that itself is worth paying through the nose for. A small balcony enables you to look down over flowers and meadows with a few sheep dotted around in decorative fashion.

Second, the rooms are stylish in design and very comfortable. Bathrooms are huge and have the accessories and toiletries one associates with luxury hotels. A fridge comes with a few complimentary bottles "to get you started" as well as fresh milk for the array of fine teas and coffee on offer and the room is big enough also to have good, comfortable seating.

Third, Rick is an excellent cook and his meals are every bit as good as those you might eat in some of NZ's best restaurants. He uses only what is fresh and in season. Although there is no choice, he discusses preferences and dietary needs with those dining in before designing the 4 course menu each evening. A very good selection of NZ wines is available as well. Rick and Linda sit with the guests who are eating each evening between preparing and serving each course. They are interesting and outgoing hosts and are particularly skilled at ensuring that nobody is left feeling isolated.

There is no pressure to eat in and Linda is very quick to recommend other local restaurants for those who prefer to try elsewhere but the advantage of not having to drive is obvious. We ate in for 3 of the 4 nights we stayed at the Acacia Cliffs Lodge and enjoyed every dish. Breakfasts are also excellent and again Rick cooks to order from a good selection of ingredients.

There are a few oddities. Although there is masses of hanging space in the room, the lack of a chest of drawers is irritating if you are staying more than a night. It was fairly cool during our stay - had it been warmer we would have found the lack of A/C more of a problem. These are minor issues however and far outweighed by the friendly and helpful hosts who could advise on every conceivable activity locally or further afield.

This is a truly great place to stay and I recommend it unequivocally. You will pay more and get considerably less for your money elsewhere in NZ.

Room Tip: Ensure you get one of the 3 rooms with a view of the bay. They all have a wonderful prospect.

“A beautiful place ... not sure it justifies the price tag”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

First of all, I should say that this is probably the most stunning location I have ever stayed in. The Lake Taupo views are unparalleled and the lodge itself is exquisitely designed. It was amazing to watch storms and sunshine blowing across the lake.

But when you're paying so much, you expect the experience to be spot on e.g. for promised complimentary services to be offered without quibbling, for wet towels to be changed without prompting, not to have to correct the bill twice...

Rick was a warm and hospitable host, but Linda at times made you feel you were a bit of an inconvenience.

The small size of the lodge also makes it hard to avoid the other guests.

Room Tip: The three rooms on the lake side have pretty much the same view, but differ slightly in terms of lay...

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Acacia Cliffs Lodge. We are pleased you enjoyed the stunning location but disappointed that your time with us did not fully meet your expectations. As a boutique lodge of only four guest rooms, we hope the opportunity to meet other guests is one to be enjoyed but we have designed the lodge so that there are both shared and private spaces for our guests, with dining options-both communal and private- available. While we strive to offer first class service, we apologise if some details were overlooked during your stay. On a personal note, our guests are the highlight for us and the reason we both love what we do . .. in no way an inconvenience. It is such a shame you left with that impression as we hope we offer a warm and welcoming luxury 'home away from home' experience.

“Charming, charming, and more charming!******”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

My husband and I stayed at Acacia Cliffs Lodge on the final leg of our honeymoon. It was such a wonderful surprise to stay at such a lovely B&B. We had never stayed at a B&B, and Rick and Linda made us feel at ease right away. It was exactly what we needed after 20 days of traveling. Linda and Rick were so helpful organizing some of our excursions for us, telling us where to eat, and feeling us as well! Rick's homemade dinner and breakfast's were so delicious! The house is so lovely and the views are amazing. The beds too were amazing- thats always important to point out!

Room Tip: there are only 4 rooms, we stayed on the top level where there is only 1 room...our view was amazing...

“A Gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

If you are visiting Taupo New Zealand this is the place to stay! Lodge owners Linda and Rick work hard to make their lodge unique and beautifully appointed. They are charming and both are fabulous chefs.

The lodge sits high on a point and has the most exquisite view in all of Taupo! You will love staying here and our only regret is that we had to leave! But if we come back it will be to stay longer at Acacia Cliffs!

“Wonderful stay - a relaxing getaway from everything”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

We stayed a Acacia Cliffs Lodge over New Year and had a lovely stay. The property is amazing and the hosts are fab - as was the breakfast! We didn't eat in during the evenings but the dinner smelt amazing. Unfortunately the weather was awful so we didn't get to see the most of the amazing views the property has, but we did glimpse them occasionally & it was pretty spectacular. The hosts really make you feel at home & we were totally relaxed. Our room was lovely - with an amazing bathroom - and the rest of the lodge is stylish & comfortable. Would highly recommend this place to everyone - especially couples. Would be a brilliant honeymoon spot.

Room Tip: Three rooms have a view and although we had the garden room with no lake view, the fabulous bathroom...
