This is a classic NZ hotel: clean, basic and exactly what you need for a few days while on holiday. We arrived on the day and asked if there were any rooms available - we were offered a cheaper room located next to the laundry. We were warned it might be a bit loud but in truth, it was fine. We appreciated the heads up.

The motel has some very considerate rules which we appreciated: spa pool unavailable after a certain hour, laundry only until 9 or 10... It contributed to the quietness of the place. It was very peaceful.

We also liked all of the local guides -- restaurant lists, menus, tourist attractions. While it rained outside we both looked through the menus and decided where to have dinner. We settled on an Italian place (which I had the name) which was fantastic and authentic.

This is my second time there this year, and both times have been excellent.
Paul and Sharyn very friendly, always willing to help at anytime.

My room was always immaculate when i would return from work.

Wireless connection was fast, and being from the uk, i am a great fooball fan
Having sky in the room was brillant.
Even if i had to watch the matches at 3 am in morning.

There is a new high quality spa which has recently been installed since my first visit,
and this was perfect to relax in after work, really makes a difference.

Walking distance from pubs and shops only five mins. Town centre 10 mins.

Would fully recommend this motel to anybody.

As a corporate client, I stay at The Northgate many times each year and can honestly say that since Paul and Sharyn took it over, the standard of the rooms has continued to improve since I first stayed there back in 2009. Paul and Sharyn always make me very welcome and they and the cleaners are extremely honest. I dropped my wallet without realizing it and the cleaner who found it, gave it to Sharyn who promptly made several calls until she finally tracked me down and I was able to get my wallet back before I left New Plymouth.
The rooms are quiet and well appointed with heat pumps that work and a small kitchen which is ideal. I especially like the large flat screen TV, and now with the addition of MySky, I can generally find something to watch when the weather turns bad.
The high speed wireless internet is great for my work stuff and being so handy to town makes it great for getting a meal or hopping out to see what is going on.
I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants an affordable motel close to all the city. There is plenty of parking and it is QUIET!

We stayed at Northgate Motor Lodge during the Rugby World Cup, and it was a great motel to base ourselves in. The owners were very friendly and helpful, and the rooms were quite well sized (although a little dated) with parking out the front. It's an easy 10 minute walk to Devon St, Pukekura Park, supermarkets and restaurants. A good base to explore New Plymouth and Taranaki.
