“Do not stay here”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

This place is has not been refurbished since it was built in the sixties. It is noisy. Worse than basic and the staff just want to make a quick buck. It states there is a 'restaurant and bar attached' this actually means you can order from the local 'roast and pizza takeaway'. I really cannot believe that a place like this is still in business in this day and age.

“Nice basic accommodation close to the city center”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

This is a very basic motel / motor inn. The staff is very welcoming! The rooms are good-sized. Just keep in mind that this is very basic. The motel is very old, but has recently been painted and "freshened". It has a nice flatscreen LCD TV, but the other appliances in the kitchenette are old. The small dorm-sized fridge is nice and has a brand new tabletop microwave. It is absolutely spotless and very clean. WiFi is available for around NZD 0.10/ MB. The location is a very short walking distance (less than 10min) from all the action in the city center. I was here for the rugby and the atmosphere in this small town was quite nice. Set your expectations appropriately and you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: get on the second floor for a bit more privacy

“Basic accommodation”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2010

I have stayed here a few nights, and will do so again. It is pretty basic, and I don't think anything has changed since it was built (In the 60's I'd say) It appears that the owners are a couple, of whom the wife is of Chinese extraction with a hard, commercial manner. The husband seems to be a pleasant chap

“Tired but tolerable and wired”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 April 2008

I stayed in a family unit for two nights with my mother and two preschoolers. We were one unit away from a very busy road, and the traffic noise didn't subside til after midnight.

The water was on gas heating, but when the showers were used in any of the three family units an annoying loud hum came from the gas box behind our unit - and people were having showers late at night - between 10pm and midnight. It was loud enough to keep you awake.

The bedcovers on the two single beds in the living area were very tired and dated. All interior doors were wooden sliding doors, which probably saved on space but was a constant attraction for a young child to play with. Separate bedroom with double and single bed crammed in.

The light bulbs were almost all 25 watt - consequently very dim, and we had to turn them all on to see anything. Sky TV was advertised, but the only two sky channels available were Sky Sport and Sky Movies.
There was a microwave, small fridge, and oven. The oven section of the oven was 'not available', just the stovetop.

It was a little too far to walk to the main shopping street with young children.

Discovered by chance that Wifi was available through zenbu.net.nz, which was great - could have been better advertised.

Laundry only available after 3:30pm - one washing machine and one dryer (dryer still used old 50c coins, which had to be obtained from the office), clothesline available.

Tucked in a tiny corner were two swings and a very basic climbing frame.

The family units appeared to be older than the block of smaller units further away from the road. A glance inside showed what appeared to be newer interiors.

I wouldn't choose to stay here again unless nothing else was available.

  • Liked — Wireless internet
  • Disliked — Very tired. Noisy. Too far from town centre.

“Great find”

We had a great stay. The motel is right on the main drag through town, but has several suites back behind reception so our room was very quiet. It had a great kitchenette and a good bed and was clean and the staff was really friendly.
