“A highlight of our trip to New Zealand - a wonderful boutique lodge.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 March 2011

Masters Lodge is a delightful small luxurious lodge close to the centre of Napier. It is beautifully furnished with wonderful pictures and every facility you could want as a traveller. The suite was comfortable, quiet with many individual quality touches.
The best aspect of this lodge however is the hospitality of the owners Larry and Joan. What great people and how well they know their business. Fantastic recommendations for dinner, an outstanding breakfast offering and some real treats for afternoon tea - Joan is a master baker. Dont stay anywhere else if you are going to Napier and if you can ask Larry
to organise dinner at the lodge - one of the best meals we had in New Zealand. Enjoy too one of Larry's expansively and enthusiastic shaken cocktails.

“This place is Special”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2011

Outstanding. In a league of its own! Joan and Larry Bloom make you feel right at home in their lovely old home on Bluff Hill overlooking Napier and the South Pacific Ocean. Our second stay there. Treated to wonderful food from skilled and friendly chefs and fabulous wine. The Art Deco motif, so fitting in Napier, is another plus. This is a ten star property with wonderful hosts. We were there for New Years and that made it all the more special.

“Great Art Deco House in an Art Deco City!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 May 2010

Overview: If you are looking for a B&B in an art deco house (in an art deco city) with great views and friendly hosts, this is the place for you. Well recommended.

The Master’s Lodge is located in an old art deco house overlooking the city, beach and Pacific Ocean in Napier. The house (which was subsequently expanded) was originally built on an island. Following the earthquake in the 1930’s which destroyed much of Napier (causing the city to be rebuilt in the art deco style for which it is now famous), the island was thrust from the ocean, with the original parts of the house along for the ride. This uplifting connected the former island—and the house--to the mainland.

There are two guest suites in the lodge, each with private bathroom located on the upper floor of the house. Both suites had incredible views over the ocean and the city. As we were the only couple staying, we had the entire upper floor all to ourselves which was nice. The bedroom was large, well-appointed and the attention to detail (most original) was most impressive. The bathroom was also very large, tiled and clean. Our room had a huge window with great views. In addition to the two suites on the top floor, there was also a wood paneled office with a large flat screen TV, selection of reading materials, wireless internet and a laptop.

The hosts were very friendly. They have owned and operated the lodge for years. In fact, they were guests at the lodge, and loved it so much they decided to buy it! They anticipated our needs, making us great dinner reservations (without us even asking). The first dinner at the Mission Winery was great. Good selection of wines and top notch food. The second dinner at Pacifica was also very good. The bluff oysters were in season, and I had by far the biggest and best oysters ever there. Breakfasts were fabulous with a good and varied selection. Eating in the dining room was a real treat.

Napier is in the wine country and we did a wine tasting tour which was wonderful. If you visit Napier, you should do the same.

“Should be on your list of places to stay before you die!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2009

We choose the Lodge as the place we were going to get married after coming across it on the internet. We were excited and looking forward to our stay but we had no idea of the experience we were going to have. The Lodge is gorgeous and the decore is amazing but the heart of the Lodge is Joan and Larry. Their warmth , hospitality and attention to detail is incredible. Reservations were made for dinner just incase we wanted them, directions were waiting when you left, no detail was left unattended. Our wedding was just the two of us and Joan and Larry made it romantic, intimate warm and perfect. We had the Winemakers dinner that evening and it is one of the culinary and wine experiences of our lives. If you have the opportunity it is not to be missed. The day we had to leave Joan and Larry was sad and we are looking for to going back to celebrate an anniversary. Thank you Joan and Larry for an incredible experience!

“Heaven in Napier”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2008

We arrived to find this magnificently restored 1800's B&B with a view that could have only been arranged in the stars. The interiors were beautifully done in authentic art deco style. All that was great but what made me take the time to write this review were the hosts and our being spoiled for 2 days.
There's always beautiful accomodations and views but Joan and Larry go out of there way to make you feel at home but better. There is nothing they won't attempt to do for you to make your stay more comfortable and stress free.
We decided not to drive to Auckland and Larry got right on the phone and arranged our air. They gave us great recommendations both locally and at future destinations in our trip.
The breakfasts they prepared for us were really terrific but you have got to do the "dinner at the lodge." They brought in a private chef for us that prepared the most incredible meal. We have dined around the world and this was a memorable meal in a gorgeous private dining room. Can not say any more than if you are in this area it's the only place to stay!
