Overview: If you are looking for a B&B in an art deco house (in an art deco city) with great views and friendly hosts, this is the place for you. Well recommended.
The Master’s Lodge is located in an old art deco house overlooking the city, beach and Pacific Ocean in Napier. The house (which was subsequently expanded) was originally built on an island. Following the earthquake in the 1930’s which destroyed much of Napier (causing the city to be rebuilt in the art deco style for which it is now famous), the island was thrust from the ocean, with the original parts of the house along for the ride. This uplifting connected the former island—and the house--to the mainland.
There are two guest suites in the lodge, each with private bathroom located on the upper floor of the house. Both suites had incredible views over the ocean and the city. As we were the only couple staying, we had the entire upper floor all to ourselves which was nice. The bedroom was large, well-appointed and the attention to detail (most original) was most impressive. The bathroom was also very large, tiled and clean. Our room had a huge window with great views. In addition to the two suites on the top floor, there was also a wood paneled office with a large flat screen TV, selection of reading materials, wireless internet and a laptop.
The hosts were very friendly. They have owned and operated the lodge for years. In fact, they were guests at the lodge, and loved it so much they decided to buy it! They anticipated our needs, making us great dinner reservations (without us even asking). The first dinner at the Mission Winery was great. Good selection of wines and top notch food. The second dinner at Pacifica was also very good. The bluff oysters were in season, and I had by far the biggest and best oysters ever there. Breakfasts were fabulous with a good and varied selection. Eating in the dining room was a real treat.
Napier is in the wine country and we did a wine tasting tour which was wonderful. If you visit Napier, you should do the same.
