“A Good Place in Napier”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

I stayed here as part of a tour group traveling the east coast. The location was excellent, a short walk to the shops, restaurants and the ocean. The room I stayed in was very good. The service from the Manager and the staff was excellent. Everyone was very friendly. Sure, the decor was a bit dated but there was nothing wrong with the place.

“Great place to Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2011

We had a lovely time in Napier. Only wished that we could have stayed longer. We had a Family room which was good. Free Internet service which was a real plus. The service that we had was excellent. The hotel staff very helpful and friendly. The hotel is centrally located to shops and restaurants. We would highly recommend. Would love to go back again and only stay a lot longer.

“Great Location - Poor Management - Dated Rooms”

We ended up at the Tennyson because it was Art Deco weekend in Napier and everywhere else was booked solid. We expected it to be below average in quality - and we were not disappointed.

The location however is excellent - very central. Most new hotels are strung out along the waterfront - the Tennyson is by the town square and right at one end of the main pedestrian walkway.

The front desk staff were out to lunch. Told us there was laundry - but then we discovered it was locked up because it was out of service and had been for a while. Then when checking out they told us there was a problem with our travel voucher (not true) and that they should not have let us stay there in the first place - made us feel real welcome.

Security was lax - hotel master keys were left unattended in an open doorway in the parking lot.

The room was plain nasty with a tiny 1950's bathroom.

The internet did not work.

Avoid.

Thank you for your feedback.
We certainly do apologise for our modem blowing up that weekend. It was replaced with a newer, better model immediately, and we have had many happy internet users since. Our free broadband station, however, was available and working the entire weekend.
A laundry was available, unsure what keys the guest refers to and due to us being fully booked, the guest may have had one of our older rooms. The Tennyson is currently under a full refurbishment program, with many rooms and bathrooms completed already.
Our friendly management is always available to discuss any concerns with a guest.

“Terrible!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 March 2011

We just stayed here with Kirra Tours. The hotel states it is recently refurbished - but it did not look like it! The lobby smell like someone had been sick. The rooms are dingy, bathrooms dirty. The breakfast was OK but the milk was off, as was the yogurt. I plan to let the tour company know. In this economy, the hotels and tour company should make a little more effort to maintain their standards. I would not recommend this hotel.

We take on board the comments of the writer. They are correct with the fact that there was a bad smell at reception, due to a member of their own bus tour being violently ill upon entering our hotel foyer. Our staff immediately assisted the sick guest, and proceeded to clean up. A commercial cleaning company was also engaged immediately to come and clean the carpets. Other members of the bus party were extremely understanding with our predicament, as it was a fellow traveller that became so ill.
We are well on the way to refurbishing all rooms at The Tennyson, and have had very positive feedback regarding our refurbishments so far. Unfortunately, not all guests on a tour can have a premium refurbished room, and if the guest concerned had raised an issue regarding the cleaning, we would have been more than happy to address it at the time.
We appreciate all comments and always try to rectify any negative feedback.

“Napier a lovely city. Hotel has a great central location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2010

First impressions are the most important.
The outside of the building gives you an indication of what's inside.
On walking through the main doors the smell of cigarette's hit us. Not just a whiff, but a strong permanant smell.

En-suite Bathroom was dated but very clean. All the usual hotel items there for the comfort of the traveller including shampoo, soap even shower caps! So attention to detail was nice.

The bedroom was dated, old fittings carpet near the end of its life. The beds were in good condition and all the linen was spotless.

Continental breakfast was ok but not great. Bowls and cutlery were tucked out of the way and difficult to locate.

It was a weekend away for our family, if we hadn't had pre-booked on the internet giving our c.card details we would not have stayed here.
I can't really complain about the nights stay. But I can say I'm glad it was only one night and I wouldn't stay there again.

I think if you're on a really tight budget and not too fussed then this is a good one night hotel.
