This was a good restaurant with interesting and quality food. I had a pumpkin and spinach filled filo pastry, that was delicious. The prices were decent and good beers. There are also pool tables. Overall a fun bar/restaurant.

Only stayed here for one night but wished we could have stayed for more!
Lovely old Art Deco hotel located right next to the beach and shops with on street parking, FREE wifi throughout the hotel, guest laundry, MED wine bar and bistro, GMK restaurant and The Rose Irish Bar.
We stayed in an orginal style (non refurbished) double room with ensuite which was on the first floor with access to the great balcony. Extremely comfy bed, tv, fridge, kettle with tea/coffee etc, hairdryer, room service menu and a free standing fan. Room was clean and we loved the old fixtures and fittings.
Had a great lunch in GMK and an amazing dinner in MED (see seperate review)
Overall cant fault this hotel or the very friendly and helpful staff, makes a change to stay in a hotel that is original and has kept its character.
We booked the Masonic Art Deco in Napier by mistake - we got confused with the County Hotel which is a block away, and thought we had got a real bargain.
We stayed 2 nights. The hotel was full both nights. We had booked thru a discount service (wotif.com) and that discounted rate may have contributed the standard of accommodation we got. Although the booking was for a queen bed, we were given a room with a double bed. Also the wotif site reported that car parking was available for $6 per night - it wasn't. But parking on the streets nearby was easy, convenient and no problems with vehicle security.
The room was adequate, a little small, clean but dated - especially the bathroom. Other reviews on Tripadvisor say the hotel is being refurbished, if so the refurbishment is not yet complete. Soundproofing was excellent, we had no issues with noise from other rooms or from outside. We could hear rain on the balcony, and to me that is a welcome noise, not a distraction. The bed was a little soft for my liking,
On the floor we were on all rooms opened onto a common balcony. the balcony is a lovely spot for getting some fresh air, a quiet space to read a book etc - unfortunately also a common spot for guests who are smokers, but I guess they have to go somewhere. However because the balcony was was common to all rooms, we could not leave the door from the room to the balcony open at night, just a small window above the door, and the room stayed oppressively hot. (there is a fan, but no air conditioning). Once the peak of summer has passed this wont be a problem.
Staff were helpful, friendly and efficient.
For the price we paid for this accommodation it was good value.
GMK Restaurant had very good service. Our Starter arrived in a matter of seconds. And as for the main course it only took 5 to 10 minutes for 5 of us! The food was good quality and beautifully presented. The kids meals were the right size and there was a great deal on. 'A kids meal, a desert and a drink for just $10!' Overall it was a very good evening. And GMK deserve a good 4 stars!
We spent two nights at the Masonic and loved it. The room was comfortable and a good mix of Art Deco furniture combined with a couple of modern pieces which were well chosen. The bathroom is due for a refurb which I hope will be done in the Art Deco style when it happens but it was clean and worked well. The reception staff were very friendly and efficient. other reviews have mentioned the noise but this hotel is an Art Deco building in the middle of town not some hermetically sealed box on some anonymous business park so the little noise there was did not prove to be a problem.
We decided to have breakfast at the hotel which turned out to be a mistake. It could have been a different hotel. The staff were offhand and unhelpful and the Bircher Muesli one of my favourite breakfast could have been used to refurbish some of the plasterwork in the main hotel it was so bad. The Eggs Benedict that my partner had had one virtually raw egg and the overall effect was cloying mixture and we both left with indigestion. The following morning we dined at the Divine Cafe across the road and were much happier with the choice there.
However overall a great experience and I would certainly stay again.
