“Excellent value for a one night stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

Due to high last minute prices for other hotels in Hamilton, we went with the Le Grand - they had an excellent deal on for one night, $109 for upgraded deluxe room with noon check out and free parking. Despite reading some poor reviews, we felt the risk for one night was not excessive. We were very glad with the choice - while the decor is certainly dated and rooms are tired and a bit on the shabby side, we had a huge room, huge bathroom, and everything we needed. No problems with cleanliness, and the bed was comfy. For the price we paid, it was a great deal. For a longer stay, we would probably pay a little more for a more modern place like the Novotel, but this saved us money for sure. Most other hotels in Hamilton seem to charge an extra $10-20 for parking per night, and that was money saved for us.

We noted that the hotel was up for sale. This could lead to some service issues I guess, with uncertainty over ownership, but we had helpful people at reception on both days we visited front desk.

People have commented on the noise, but it wasn't a problem on the night we were there.

We didn't have any kind of a view, but it didn't matter for a one night stay.

You can't ask for a better location, it's right in the centre of town. It would be easier if there was an area outside the lobby for picking up and dropping off, but I guess this is a very old heritage building and it's right on the roadfront.

“Noisy But Good Value For Money”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Our family of four spent two nights at Le Grand. I requested a room at the back of the hotel after reading the reviews commenting on the noise. It was however still reasonably noisy but it being a weekend and located on the main street of the city, its to be expected. The hotel is shabby chic and is in need of updating. In saying that though, the room was enormous and had a king bed and two singles with plenty of room and a big bathroom. It was clean and comfortable and for $145 a night, I can't complain - definitely value for money. Can recommend River Kitchen and Palate as fantastic places to eat.

“I hate 'beeping' rubbish trucks!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

Stayed 1 night in a Deluxe suite using a Wotif free upgrade. Huge room and bathroom, but agree with 'triflow' that a lot of wasted space. Great location amongst all the restaurants, bars and the casino. Good free parking too. Unfortunately noise problems at 1.00am with restaurants below cleaning up and putting out rubbish and again at 6.00am with 'beeping' rubbish trucks picking up this rubbish. Very thoughtful of hotel to supply sets of ear plugs - should have been warned by this! Lack of sleep spoilt great night.

Room Tip: I suggest you use the ear plugs, especially if you are above the restaurants!

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay at Le Grand Hotel. Unfortunately as we are an inner-city Hotel some road noise can be expected outside of our control. We are currently working with the Heritage Trust for double glazing on our windows but as you can appreciate this is a lengthy process. Once again we thank you for your feedback. “Not grand at all”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

stayed at le grand a few weeks ago was a massive room but dated and terribly hot and when asked for a fan it took them so long we called twice then they came up with the most tiny fan id ever seen. We had a young baby with us who always sleeps in her port a cot when we travel but this time she screamed every time we put her in she just didnt like the feel to this room. the bathroom was not clean there was dust caking on top of the toilet roll holder and the tiles had bathroom scum all through them it was so bad i wore my jandels in the shower, under the bed was so much dust it wasn't funny and there was TOOTHPASTE on the tap in our sink. We had to have the windows open so it was noisey. I was very disgusted at how poorly cleaned this room was and do not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Thank you for your feedback. I was disappointed to hear that your stay did not meet with your expectations. Obviously the cleanliness of your room did not meet with our usual high standard at Le Grand Hotel and this matter has been dealt with accordingly. Once again we thank you for your feedback and hope you will give Le Grand Hotel the second chance it deserves. Kind Regards, Jenna Mann

“Average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

Stayed there on a Saturday night and even though I was expecting to hear lots of noise from the street due to the location, it wasnt that bad and I think it was because it was pelting down with rain that the party goers decided to stay indoors that night.

We didnt have any ear plugs in our room but that maybe because we were on the hotel carpark side. The carpark is VERY tight, however it is free so no complaints there.

The room was nice except for the massive soaking wet patch under the window by our bed which we had to keep avoiding. It was raining that day/night but the window had been closed. There was no cutlery besides teaspoons to eat our food that we bought back with us. Luckily we didnt need a plate to eat off as there was none of those either. No pen to write feedback on the feedback form that was on the desk which usually all Hotels provide along with some stationery (i.e. writing pad). No room service. The mini bar choices were limited, in fact the hotel might as well not provide this either.

I guess my expectations were pretty high when I choose this place to stay.

Its in a good location. Did not eat at the main restaurant as it was closed but there are plenty restaurant choices along the street.

Wouldnt stay there again to be honest.

Thank you for your feedback. Should you have notified our friendly staff of the wet patch next to your bed, a room move and possibly a complimentary upgrade for the inconvenience would have been offered. As a Hotel, plates & cutlery are not provided in the rooms like they would be in self-contained apartments. However these could have been delivered to you upon request. The Hotel does offer room service from Piccola Italia which is located on the ground floor next to reception as outlined in the compendium in your room and the welcome letter you received upon check in. Our mini bars are stocked with a range of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages as well as snacks. Once again we thank you for your feedback as it is crucial to the continual improvement of the hotel. Kind Regards, Jenna Mann
