My partner and I usually stay at the Hyatt in Perth when we want a little time away and it is always wonderful there, we get everything we ask for and so much more and the staff are always lovely!
This time, because of room availability, we couldnt get into the Hyatt, but I had heard pretty good things about the Duxton before so we decided to try it out. We made out booking via wotif.com (we always book our hotels through their website) for a delux room with a king bed and free buffet breakfast.
The issues started the moment we walked into the hotel. We were met by the most unfriendly, unhappy looking staff who checked us in and took a $200 deposit from my credit card! $200!!! The Hyatt, which in retrospec is a far better hotel only takes a $50 deposit. I didnt make a big deal of it and paid anyway, hoping you get what you paid for. We also asked for an extended check out, something the Hyatt gives you for free until 4pm the next day, we were told they could give us until 12pm free of charge but any longer would cost an extra $150!
As we made out way up to our room on the 9th floor I was getting excited for a beautiful room with high up views of the Swan River. When get got into our room we found we had been allocated a tiny twin room, no king bed, cramped conditions... yuck! I called reception on the room phone and the receptionist, Sierra, was SO rude! She told us it was our fault, she had the confirmation in front of her and this is what we booked, there was nothing she could do about it and no king bed rooms were available. My partner checked the confirmaiton on his phone and he had proof that we had requested a king room!
We headed down to reception, but on the way we got stuck in the lifts for 15 minutes!! Its not that the lifts weren't moving, but due to renovations, the lifts went up and down to every floor and took 15mins to finally reach the lobby! When we got to reception the poe-faced duty manager changed out booking after much debate and us flat out telling them the Hyatt was better. We got the last king room available in the hotel even after they said there was nothing left.
The room we got was great. A big room, spa, city views (only from the first floor) and all the ammenities we felt we were promised.
In the morning, we had breakfast. Decent meal, decent food, not nearly as well presented as the Hyatt but it did what it said. Down side - any drinks not on self serve, you have to pay extra for (soft drinks, cappacino etc), again, something the Hyatt does for free if you book with a free buffett breakfast.
Overall, the Hyatt and the Duxton are both 5 star restaurants. If it were up to me, I would take a couple of those stars away from the Duxton for poor service, poor rooms, poor hotel overall!
Room Tip: Dont bother with a twin, the rooms are tiny! If you absolutely have to stay there, get a king!
