We were conned by the old Italian guy at the front of the restaurant promising genuine Italian cuisine. Quick to get us onto a table, then after waiting ages for a menu or any form of service, we queried him, being told no problem, the waiter was on the way. This became the norm of the night (the old guy drawing more suckers into the restaurant and no service from the overloaded staff).
We ordered Bruschetta, with mozzarella and tomato. We received grilled cheese & tomato on toast. Not quite what we expected.
We ordered oysters. We cancelled them after the main meal was delivered with no sign of the oysters.
We ordered gnocci and shrimp rissitto. Both very ordinary.
Couldn't get out of there fast enough and when paying the bill (had to go inside to do this as surprise, surprise, sick of waiting for someone to bring the bill), we made some comments about the service etc, which were received with incredulity.
Enough said, been using tripadvisor for years and this is the first time I have made a comment, fair to warn others. Sad to see overseas tourists sitting at the restaurant and suffering the same fate as ourselves. Not a good advertisement for Lygon Street, or Melbourne for that matter. This type of restaurant should not be in business.
