“a hovel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 March 2010

I wish I had seen these reviews before booking online. Went for a weekend. Website looked OK and price reasonable.

BUT, when we got there ... a demolition site in reception, filthy entrance hall, no lift, had to carry suitcases up to the required floor up a narrow, tortuous, dirty staircase. Enter a smelly, hot, ugly 'apartment', incredibly shabby, worse than a backpacker hostel ... small plastic table and two plastic chairs ... two ugly and uncomfortable armchairs in front of a laptop screen size TV.

In the bathroom: no towel rails, no shelf or vanity basin, nowhere to put anything, dirty towel left in the basin, no shower curtain, cheapest toilet paper you can buy.

In the tiny cramped bedroom: uncomfortable, small bed (double??? I doubt it - a large single, maybe), only one reading lamp, hardly any hangers, no mirrors.

In the kitchen: filthy, nothing - not even milk - in the frig. Dirty kettle. Minimum coffee, tea, sugar sachets. Didn't get to look inside cupboards because we immediately decided to blow our $270 for two nights and find alternative accommodation and leave.

Even then, couldn't find the manager - he'd gone by 5 pm and so we were unable to cancel the next night. Next morning, we went back to cancel second night ... still no manager! It is now Monday morning and we are still trying to get our money back for the second night. To top it all off, we were told by a young lad standing in for the manager on the Saturday morning that there was a 24 hour cancellation policy. However, nobody there to tell! A phone number was posted on the reception door for emergency BUT accompanied by a warning that, if if not considered an emergency, you would be fined $100 ... so we didn't ring.

Place should be struck off. Don't know how it keeps any sort of rating at all. DON"T GO THERE!!!

“DON'T GO THERE! Even a hostel is better....”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2009

This is not a holiday / business apartment. Building is 'being renovated' they told us (on arrival, not on forehand!) Renovated is not the word, it is a construction site.
One night we had to climb over scaffolding to get in. Builders walking in and out the apartment and no response on complaints, no compensation.
Even when they will finish the project it will be lousy, poor quality of renovations, poor hygiene standards.

“Warning... bed bugs”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 May 2009

Let's cut to the chase. I was bitten by bed bugs. I know I was not the only guest to be so affected. Management were outstandingly rude and unhelpful. They did not address the problem and instead of giving me partial or full refunds they accused me of causing the problem. Do not stay here. Stay away!

Facilities were basic - the so called full kitchen only had a couple of dirty saucepans and a filthy bent fry pan. There were no cleaning materials. The pool 'in complex' is in a house down the street and is tiny.

Read the other reviews on this page carefully, but most of all bear in mind that you risk an expensive fumigation of your luggage if you stay here.

“Slept on the floor”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2008

Pros: Good location. Close to trams. 30 mins walk to city. Quiet, safe neighbourhood. Restaurants and cafes nearby. Apartment clean, bright and cheerful.

Cons: Entrance and stairwell filthy with the ambience of a slum (in contrast to the apartment itself). The building exterior not much better. Long, narrow driveway, hazardous for vehicles. No matches for the gas stove nor washing up liquid was provided. We were assured there was a queen sized bed - it was actually an old, uncomfortable double and so awful that I actually slept on the floor. The small TV only receives the three local commercial channels.

“Great Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2008

I stayed at 200 Toorak Road which was leasted by Aston Apartments of Powell Street. I have to say that I am glad I paid the additional money reading the other reviews!

We had a 2 bedroom apartment which seemed new, freah, light and very safe and secure. The location was very convenient, just across from south Yarra Station and a few blocks from Chapel Street.

The apartment was not well insulated, despite the mild temperatures (22 celcius) it was very warm in the living areas and there was considerable street noise and full morning sun which made having a relaxing lie in somewhat impossible. I am not sure where the "serviced" came from but our room was not tended to at all during our stay.

However the apartment was well appointed, with new appliances and broadband internet and had washing facilities, so we were able to wash our own towels.
