I just recently returned from spending 2 nights in a serviced apartment at Somerset Gordon Place. Firstly some of the positives, the location of the hotel is great, short walk to Lygon street, very close to shopping and theartes. The room itself was not too bad, the bedroom was a little small but probably adequate for business travelers seeking a serviced apartment. The kitchen was clean and more than adequate. I was also happy to see they offered free wireless(and wired) internet.
Now for the negatives, the mattress on the bed was old, hard and myself and my fiance both woke with aching backs (we are only 28 so this is not a common occurrence). The linen on the bed was even older and covered in 10 years worth of fading stains, the dooner/duvet was thin and uncovered,. Frankly I have been seen better linen at Eastern European backpacker hostels, considering this place is 4 starts they really need to update and improve their bedding, after all, a comfortable night sleep is the main objective of a hotel/apartment. The cleanliness of the bathroom was not too bad, however there was some slight mold between a few of the tiles towards the bottom of the shower.
My 2nd biggest gripe was with the housekeeping staff. After a busy morning out and about in Melbourne and still being tired from the previous nights flight, we decided to go back to hotel to take a quick afternoon snooze around 3pm. Noticing that our apartment hadn't been serviced we decided to place the Do Not Disturb sign on the door in order to get some uninterrupted nap time. 30mins later we get a phone call from housekeeping 'We noticed you have the do not disturb sign on the door, Do you want your room made up?". Although they meant well, this was very irritating, they read the sign saying do not disturb so they decided to disturb me by calling the room phone? Do not disturb means do not disturb!
The 2nd incident with housekeeping occurred the next morning around 9:30am, with Checkout being at 11am we decided to enjoy a lazy morning, we were showering and slowly getting our suitcases packed for departure. At 9:30am housekeeping knocks on the door 'Housekeeping do you want your room made up'. Now this just confuses me, I would assume they have a list of who is checking out that day, simply follow the list and don't make up those rooms until the guests have checked out, simple right? Secondly if I did accept their request to make up the room, were they going to come back and do it all over again at 11am when we depart, or just leave it for the next guests?
ok i realize I'm beginning to rant a little bit here, it just baffled me to witness so much amateurishness at and establishment claiming to be 4 stars.
In summary, If you want somewhere close to the theater and aren't too picky then its a good option. However for this price there is much better alternatives in Melbourne.
