“Very Average, better alternatives available”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 March 2011

I just recently returned from spending 2 nights in a serviced apartment at Somerset Gordon Place. Firstly some of the positives, the location of the hotel is great, short walk to Lygon street, very close to shopping and theartes. The room itself was not too bad, the bedroom was a little small but probably adequate for business travelers seeking a serviced apartment. The kitchen was clean and more than adequate. I was also happy to see they offered free wireless(and wired) internet.

Now for the negatives, the mattress on the bed was old, hard and myself and my fiance both woke with aching backs (we are only 28 so this is not a common occurrence). The linen on the bed was even older and covered in 10 years worth of fading stains, the dooner/duvet was thin and uncovered,. Frankly I have been seen better linen at Eastern European backpacker hostels, considering this place is 4 starts they really need to update and improve their bedding, after all, a comfortable night sleep is the main objective of a hotel/apartment. The cleanliness of the bathroom was not too bad, however there was some slight mold between a few of the tiles towards the bottom of the shower.
My 2nd biggest gripe was with the housekeeping staff. After a busy morning out and about in Melbourne and still being tired from the previous nights flight, we decided to go back to hotel to take a quick afternoon snooze around 3pm. Noticing that our apartment hadn't been serviced we decided to place the Do Not Disturb sign on the door in order to get some uninterrupted nap time. 30mins later we get a phone call from housekeeping 'We noticed you have the do not disturb sign on the door, Do you want your room made up?". Although they meant well, this was very irritating, they read the sign saying do not disturb so they decided to disturb me by calling the room phone? Do not disturb means do not disturb!
The 2nd incident with housekeeping occurred the next morning around 9:30am, with Checkout being at 11am we decided to enjoy a lazy morning, we were showering and slowly getting our suitcases packed for departure. At 9:30am housekeeping knocks on the door 'Housekeeping do you want your room made up'. Now this just confuses me, I would assume they have a list of who is checking out that day, simply follow the list and don't make up those rooms until the guests have checked out, simple right? Secondly if I did accept their request to make up the room, were they going to come back and do it all over again at 11am when we depart, or just leave it for the next guests?
ok i realize I'm beginning to rant a little bit here, it just baffled me to witness so much amateurishness at and establishment claiming to be 4 stars.

In summary, If you want somewhere close to the theater and aren't too picky then its a good option. However for this price there is much better alternatives in Melbourne.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback of the property, while I am glad to read your kind words for the room itself and the location, I am however disappointed to read about the low standard housekeeping had provided you during your stay. Especially concerning the Do Not Disturb and knocking on your door before your check-out time.

Please understand, this is not up to our high housekeeping standards we uphold at Somerset Gordon Place. We have strict polices regarding Do Not Disturb signs, especially after 2pm. I have spoken to our Housekeeping Manager about his staff with check-out rooms, as we do not service the room till after 11am. So I was very surprised to read a housekeeping attendant had knocked on your door prior to 11am.

I do greatly apologize for the inconvenience caused over the above matters and regarding your comments about the bed and the aching backs, both you and your husband suffered during your stay.

Again, thank you for your feedback and I do hope we could welcome you back to Somerset Gordon Place in the future to experience the proper high standards we set ourselves.

Kind Regards.

“Impossible - never book - violation of cancellation policies - mean staff/management”

My husband and I booked a trip to Australia including Melbourne and we planned well ahead of time. This hotel seemed to be nice, attractive, etc. We booked through a very competent international travel agency STA Travel for exactly Jan 23-25th.
While we were on our way to Australia, during our stopyover in Taipei, Jauary 12th, my husband learned of the totally unexpected passing of his mother and we had to return to Europe prematurely. Immediately, and still in Taiwan, I cancelled all our other portions of the trip, respectively postponed them until November. All the other companies, hotels, airlines were very understanding - with the exception of this particular hotel.
We could have supplied a death certificate but the hotel made absolutely no attempt to help out in this situation.
Therefore, given the way, they treat patrons in such a mean way, I can absolutely not recommend this hotel ever to anyone and I sure hope that one day they will have slightly more accomodating management/staff.
As I am a total frequent traveller, having seen more places in the world on business as well as leasure, visited more hotels, large and small, leading and B&B, I sure feel very qualified to write this report and I will post a copy to all the other major hotel evaluation sites.

“Compact and a tad smelly.”

Stayed here for 4 nights with a group of friend. The 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom appartment was fairly small but was adequate. Our main gripe was the strong smell of cigarette smoke which we couldn't shift due to having no opening windows.
The location of the apparment is good and fairly central.
There is a decent sized pool but its cleanliness left a lot to be desired, we even found a newspaper in it one morning accompanied by numerous dead beasties and bugs. Overall I'd suggest looking elsewhere as the price was not especially reasonable.

“Quality value accommodation in the city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2011

We arrived early to the Somerset Gordon Place, to find our room ready and a high floor as requested. Judging from some of the reviews on here, we must have struck lucky with the room, which was huge, and had plenty of wardrobe space (even for all my clothes), a nice sized shower room with seperate toilet and a fully equiped kitchen. The desk staff were always friendly and ready to help with any questions and or queries that we had and although the weather while we were there was not suitable for the pool, we thought the facilities fine. This was our first stop on our trip to Australia and it was a great base for us to get out and about in Melbourne, with China town on the door step, plus many other restaurants and eateries and easy access to the trams which we used to get around. The Hotel also provided free internet access, which was very handy and we loved the atmosphere and architecture of the building. The gym was pretty rubbish from what we could see, but we were here to have a clean, safe and secure bed for the night after a day of sightseeing and fun and the Somerset Gordon Place did not disappoint.

“Don't stay here!”

I stayed at this place for 2 nights with 3 other friends. Our room felt very unclean,we were kept awake by drug addicts (literally) outside our back glass door-there were used sringes on our step.We had requested 4 champagne glasses to be in the room upon arrival, not there, took ages for them to arrive.Empty beer bottles littered the footpath right by the entrance to the hotel.Don't stay here,,there are better places like Punt Hill Apartments just down the road.
