I booked the Mantra because of its proximity to the MCG (and it IS very close, ideal for the football) but was pleased when I realized it is also only a 10-15 minute walk to the city. I didn't notice the noise referred to by a previous reviewer so maybe one side of the hotel is better than the other in that respect? The staff were extremely pleasant and happy to accommodate all requests if possible. I agree with a previous review which said the decor was looking a bit tired. Although the bathroom still looked modern, the carpets looked a bit old and slightly stained but the room (a studio) was well-equipped and quite adequate for me on my own. Very comfy bed, small TV but it's a small room too. I got a pretty good deal on the hotel's website and couldn't fault my stay. If you want to eat out you will need to walk to the city or catch a tram (handy) to restaurants.

My partner and I stayed at this hotel for a week whilst trying to find an apartment in the City and we couldn't recommend it more. The staff really are great and couldn't have been more helpful. We had a late arrival and the restaurant was shut but reception had a wide range of takeaway/delivery menus. Although this hotel is classed as East Melbourne it's only a 5 minute walk to the CBD and the MCG and tennis courts are on your doorstop. The rooms are a good size and well equipped.

I returned to melbourne to go to the football and see the changes in the city and wasn't dissapointed with the location of this hotel. Yes it is only 5 min to the MCG, yes its only 15 min stroll to St Kilda rd, and Southbank.
The facilities were great and rooms spacious and well apointed and the location is quiet.
I will be back again this year as well. Highly recommended.

My partner and I stayed in a studio room for 2 nights last October (sorry for the late review). We picked this hotel because out of the ones that were available at the time, this had the most decent reviews on TripAdvisor.

Having said that, couldn't get proper sleep either night because of the noise of the train. MCG and Rod Laver just at your doorstep but walk to City outskirts took approximately 15 minutes. There's an option though to catch a tram into the City from the main street (Wellington Street). Bathroom design gave us a headache (but looks great in pics) and there were many stains around the room. We had room service for dinner and food was nice and reasonably priced. Staff polite and helpful.

Probably wouldn't stay here again unless going to MCG or Rod Laver events.
