“Heritage building - slightly pricey”

Stayed at the Bayview Suite on for two nights during our visit to Hobart. The place had a nice homely feel.

The location is good along Sandy Bay road, across Battery Point and a 10 minute walk down to Salamanca Place. Free parking is available and breakfast is included in the price. Even though its along a busy road the room was pretty quiet.

The structure is grand with a common reading room, dining room and the owner's rooms on the ground floor and guests rooms on a mezzanine and top floor. They serve free port wine in the common reading room.

Well the bedroom may have had views of the Bay when it was built, but for now its a misnomer. However, the room was quite big with big window panes, wall to wall carpets, a queen's bed, sofa, TV, tea/coffee maker, mini-fridge, iron and ironing board. We had a heater in our room and an additional thermal blanket for the bed.

The bathroom was big, had a spa and a shower, heaters, well kept.

Breakfast was standard with eggs, bacon, tomatoes, toast, cereal, muesli, fruits, yogurt and tea/coffee. The reason I've marked 3 stars on service is because our request for a simple omlette was turned down saying that they don't do them; my take is that given you do scrambled and fried eggs it shouldn't have been much of an issue to cook an omlette. However, I must mention that everything else was good, our room was done when we were away and towels replaced. We were offered a jug of milk in case we would like to make any tea/coffee during the day. And all our other touristy queries were answered.

I liked the accommodation and the feel, could've been a little more competitively priced.

“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2010

I stayed at the Gattonside over the weekend during a catch up with a friend, the price was very reasonable, and we received a complimentary upgrade, which was very kind. The room was enormous, well equipped and spotlessly clean, bedding was warm and comfortable, and even though it is located on a main road and we had suite #1 (a front facing room) I didn't once hear any traffic noise. We slept through breakfast so I can't comment on that, but I would definitely stay again and recommend it to anyone.

“COMFORTABLE STAY”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2010

A lovely old house, gracious and comfortably furnished. In a good position, on a busy road but set back so the trafiic is not intrusive. The gardens are lovely, and it isabout a 10 minute walk from downtown Hobart. The rooms are comfortable and spacious, but something needs to be done about the awful water pressure in the shower. Breakfast was tasty and adequate.

“All round great experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2010

My wife needed to be in Hobart for a Monday meeting, so we decided to make a weekend of it and fly down the Friday before. We chose the Gattonside, mainly based on a few pictures and price, and were certainly glad that we did. We had suite #5, which was an enormous room with a four poster bed and an adjoining bathroom with an equally enormous whirlpool tub. We both slept like logs, even though the Gattonside sits on a rather busy road.
The building is heritage listed, and the interior and decoration is appropriately fitting without being too "frumpy." That said, modern furniture just wouldn't fit. I felt that a good and comfortable balance was struck without having it feel too much like your great aunt's front room that no one is allowed in. Chocolate and port on offer in the evenings is a nice touch.
We found the location to be very convenient, just a short walk to the Salamanca markets on Saturday morning, and a quick stroll to some great restaurants (we tried Monty's on Montpelier, a 5 minute walk away and had a great meal).
Gattonside was a great base to explore Hobart from, the breakfasts were generous and our hosts were quite accommodating. I'd certainly return on my next trip to Hobart.

“Beautiful B&B in great location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2009

Gattonside is a beautiful heritage listed building with a lovely garden. Host Nicole was welcoming and helpful. The room, with fresh flowers, a four poster bed and lovely old furniture was roomy and comfortable and had lots of character. The bathroom was huge and lovely. Breakfast choice was small but okay and served in a friendly and efficient way. Guests can use the laundry. There was some traffic noise but the building itself was quiet- you could not hear other guests. There was plenty of easy parking. It was an easy walk to Battery Point, Salamanca Place and the wharves. If I return to Hobart I would definitely stay there again.
