“Our Second Visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 February 2009

Ednam House is a beautiful old home that has been converted into self-contained rooms. It contains most of the usual trimmings that you look for when staying somewhere with a colder climate (internal heating, bed-warmers, heat-lamps in the bathrooms, etc), but also contains beautiful antique furniture, which differs from room to room. It is true (as one of the previous reviews states) that the breakfast provided in little more than the bare minimals (bread, cereal, juice and yoghurt), but when you are just a short walk from the many food options on Elizabeth St, eating breakfast in would have meant one less experience of eating-out! As a young couple who love the feel and serenity of old Victorian homes (and all the antiques that come with it), the dining at Elizabeth St is definitely geared toward a more trendy and youthful market. If you can afford a little extra to stay there, it is well worth it!

Ample parking, friendly and unimposing service, quiet and all-over relaxing (especially if you chose the room with the spa!), our second stay there won't be our last!

“Victorian splendour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2008

We wanted something a bit special for our final night in Hobart and picked this from Wotif.com. Ednam House is a Victorian mansion that has been converted into 6 (I think) heritage themed suites. We stayed in Derwent on the first floor.
It appears the house was once surrounded by land that was no doubt landscaped gardens but over the years the lot has been subdivided and is now surrounded by aparments and most of the garden has disappeared to bituminised parking and a tennis court. The front door is at the side and you enter past the library (now Reception) on the right and through to the hall where a magnificent timber staircase climbs up and around to the first floor. Over the stairs is a huge, truly magnificent leadlight window which glows like a jewel! The original fittings are still evident in the house which is beautifully painted in heritage colours. Our suite and another were on the west side and were entered via a rather shabby modern door which seemed to serve no purpose that we could see other than it might have been a relic from a time when the house could have been partitioned into flats. The owners should remove this as it detracts from the otherwise opulent feel to this grand house. Our ensuite was half of what we think was once an adjoining dressing room; the other half has also been converted to an ensuite for an adjoining bedroom. Our ensuite was very modern and to a high spec. The spa was a single but deep and roomy enough for two. The bedcoverings were expensive and plush and the bed delightfully comfortable with a large Huon pine barley twist headboard. The room was quiet and the breakfast was the standard fare these days eg tub of fruit, yoghurt, cereal and bread for the toaster. The cleanliness was exemplary and our stay was very comfortable. It is not in the heart of the city but was easy to find and not inconvenient. Great for those seeking a reasonably priced accommodation which is a cut above the normal motel type scene.

  • Liked — The grandeur of the house
  • Disliked — The uninspired breakfast
