“Friendly Ulonga.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2008

We stayed at Ulonga Lodge as part of a short tour 'round South Australia. We took the ferry from Cape Jervis. The crossing was about 45 mins and only a little rough. KI is fab. We were out of season and so everywhere was really quiet. The Flinders National Park had a few walks closed due to bushfire damage, but was still worth a visit.

The lodge was basic, but spotlessly clean. Everything worked and we had a friendly welcome by Cath and Steve. Cath's daughter even lent me her fishing rod for an hours fishing from the jetty.

Kangaroo Island Lodge next door has a nice restaurant and a bar (bar for locals really).

KI itself is so beautiful and unspoilt - an ideal break from the bright lights.

“The real OZ”

Together with my husband and 3 children we were visiting relatives and friends in OZ.We visited Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.Whilst in Adelaide we decided to go and see some of the famous Australian wildlife having disappointingly only seen Kangaroo warning signs.

We found Ulonga Lodge advertised in the Sealink brochure in their shop in Adelaide and also on the net.Sadly from experience we have been too often been disappointed having seen places in glossy brochures looking nothing like he real deal.Ulonga Lodge appeared to fit the bill sleeping 5 for a reasonable price.

We travelled by ferry to the island and arrived on speck at the lodge. We were met by the charming manager Cath, she like ourselves are from the UK,she has an her infectious enthusiasm for the island and her enviable new life.

The lodge is on the sea front, 20 yards from the sea.It is on the sea front where the pelicans gather at tea time, we were lucky enough to feed the Pelicans with fish donated to us by some fishermen who were staying at the lodge, what an experience. When the pelicans had had their fill they were replaced by the wallabies..just fantastc.

We stayed for 3 nights in the units, they are clean comfortable and basic.we were only after a base, and the lodge just fitted the bill.

Cath recommended a number of places to visit, sadly too many to do in the time we had.We managed to see the amazing Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, Parndana Wildlife Park and sun bathe on the beautiful Vivinne Bay beach we also saw the lttle penguins emerge from the sea at Penneshaw.

We always say when we leave a place on holiday that we will go back sometime but Cath it really is a promise!!

“Great fun place to stay”

Found this little lodge on the web by chance, and we loved it. We really wanted the cottage, but it wasn't available, so we stayed at one of the cabins, which was nice enough.
The owners, Judith and Glen, were beyond friendly, even when Glen had to drop his gardening and rush to buy groceries for our very-early breakfast, which was delicious... he remained friendly even when we plugged his washing machine, which was admirable.

The name Ulonga means "A place to sit and talk", which really serves the place right.

An important warning about Kangaroo Island itself: avoid driving for long distances after dark. We made the mistake and stayed at the west side of the island until 9pm or so (well, we really wanted to see a platypus, which - of course - we didn't), and one of the locals who looked at us as if we have lost our minds, instructed us to drive back in no more 30 mph, because of the animals that go partying on the road. We thought he was pulling our leg, but - sure enough, 30 mph it was, and we counted about 60 different animals along - and on - the road, some of which cheerfully jumped right at our wheels. It was by far the scariest drive ever, and it took us 2 hours to get to the lodge, which is located on the east side of the island. So - plan ahead...
