“Adequate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

We spent three nights at the end of November - we were the only people on site. Our cabin was clean and comfortable but a bit basic. The only evidence of refurbishment was the large new fridge and small wall-mounted LCD TV. The bathroom was dated but OK and the shower worked. American River itself is quite isolated - we had to drive to Kingscote for a meal in the evening.

“Find another place to stay.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

Arrived at the cabin and it was not very clean. It was dusty and clearly not been maintained, very run down. The air conditioning units did not work, the site states that breakfast is available, only for the cafe to have been closed and only open for lunch. Good location just a shame the accommodation hasn't been kept well.

“Clean, neat cabins well located”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 December 2011

Our cabin for 2 nights had 2 bedrooms,a bathroom and combined kitchen (fully equipped) lounge-dining area and a small verandah. Everything was neat and clean. It had a pleasant view over the bay and was quite close to a bird-hide and pelican area. Dave, the person-in -charge in the absence of the owner, was most pleasant and told us all the sights that we had to see. We even found the rare black cockatoos right where he said that they would be!
The second day we had no water due to some plumbing problem - it affected all of the cabins. No doubt it was repaired when a plumber could be found but we were on our way to our other nights on the western side of the island.

“Good base for daytrips”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2011

We stayed for 2 nights during off-peak season, booked through Sealink as part of its $10 (per person, one way) ferry fare deal.

The unit was a little dark (but the skylight does help a bit) but most importantly..very clean and tidy.

Large living area...the only minor complaint would be that the TV being mounted high on the wall nearer to the kitchen does make watching tv from the lounge a little uncomfortable. The rooms are small, but when you're tired out from a day's exploring, you're likely to be asleep within minutes of touching the pillow anyway, so the slightly claustrophobic size wasn't a problem at all for us. As we were there in winter, it would have been nice if the beds had electric blankets. But apart from the initial cold of getting into bed, it was comfortable enough if you leave the bedroom door open and the heating (in the lounge room) on low through the night.

The only major problem was that the hot water ran out on the first day. We had arrived around noon and it was fine then. But after returning at night, the hot water ran out in the middle of a shower. We telephoned the owner Cath to let her know and she said it was too late to get someone to fix/look at it. It was about 8pm on a Saturday, so fair enough, however it would have been much better service if we could have been allowed use of other units (the one next to us was unoccupied) to shower. If it weren't winter it wouldn't be so bad not to have hot water for a shower, but well, it was.

Cath came over the next morning around 8 (we'd told her that we would be heading out at 7.30 ish) and gave us the key to the next door unit for access to the bathroom, so the problem was effectively handled. I understand that Cath doesn't live on-site, but situations like this should highlight the need for a night manager to be available. Or at least for someone to be sent over (in our case) with a key to the next unit. For this reason, we can only give 3 stars.

Apart from this little hiccup, I would recommend Ulonga Lodge as a base to spend the nights after a day of sightseeing, for groups on a budget.

“Friendly Ulonga.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2008

We stayed at Ulonga Lodge as part of a short tour 'round South Australia. We took the ferry from Cape Jervis. The crossing was about 45 mins and only a little rough. KI is fab. We were out of season and so everywhere was really quiet. The Flinders National Park had a few walks closed due to bushfire damage, but was still worth a visit.

The lodge was basic, but spotlessly clean. Everything worked and we had a friendly welcome by Cath and Steve. Cath's daughter even lent me her fishing rod for an hours fishing from the jetty.

Kangaroo Island Lodge next door has a nice restaurant and a bar (bar for locals really).

KI itself is so beautiful and unspoilt - an ideal break from the bright lights.

  • Liked — Cleanliness and locatron.
  • Disliked — Supermarket miles away.
