We stayed for 2 nights during off-peak season, booked through Sealink as part of its $10 (per person, one way) ferry fare deal.
The unit was a little dark (but the skylight does help a bit) but most importantly..very clean and tidy.
Large living area...the only minor complaint would be that the TV being mounted high on the wall nearer to the kitchen does make watching tv from the lounge a little uncomfortable. The rooms are small, but when you're tired out from a day's exploring, you're likely to be asleep within minutes of touching the pillow anyway, so the slightly claustrophobic size wasn't a problem at all for us. As we were there in winter, it would have been nice if the beds had electric blankets. But apart from the initial cold of getting into bed, it was comfortable enough if you leave the bedroom door open and the heating (in the lounge room) on low through the night.
The only major problem was that the hot water ran out on the first day. We had arrived around noon and it was fine then. But after returning at night, the hot water ran out in the middle of a shower. We telephoned the owner Cath to let her know and she said it was too late to get someone to fix/look at it. It was about 8pm on a Saturday, so fair enough, however it would have been much better service if we could have been allowed use of other units (the one next to us was unoccupied) to shower. If it weren't winter it wouldn't be so bad not to have hot water for a shower, but well, it was.
Cath came over the next morning around 8 (we'd told her that we would be heading out at 7.30 ish) and gave us the key to the next door unit for access to the bathroom, so the problem was effectively handled. I understand that Cath doesn't live on-site, but situations like this should highlight the need for a night manager to be available. Or at least for someone to be sent over (in our case) with a key to the next unit. For this reason, we can only give 3 stars.
Apart from this little hiccup, I would recommend Ulonga Lodge as a base to spend the nights after a day of sightseeing, for groups on a budget.
