My husband and I stayed at Desert Cave Hotel for 1 night on the way from Port Auguasta to Uluru in Dec 2011. The hotel was built in roughly 80's. The roon is of a reasonable size but the room charge is over its value. The room is dark and the air smells funny which we thought make sense, since it's been dugged in the underground rock. It was our first time to stay in this area, so we thought all the hotels/motels in town might be the same or worse than this one (since this hotel charges a premium price). On the way back from Uluru, we decided to try some cheaper ones due to our limit budget. Then, we randomly chose one called the Underground Motel. We found the Underground Motel is much better and cheaper than "Desert Cave Hotel". There isn't any bad smell at all, although the room is also dark. Other room facilities are pretty much the same as the ones at Desert Cave Hotel. If you are on business, I believe "Desert Cave" may be a good choice (I asked the reception at Desert Cave if their customers are mostly tourists. They said their major customers are business people.) But if you are on holiday or on the way to your next holiday destination, please choose B&Bs.
