Whilst this place isn't great, it is no where near as bad as I thought it would be based on the other reviews here. The exterior of the hotel is pretty bad. The building is filthy and we didn't even want to enter. However, once inside it's not that bad. Yes there is a smell in the foyer/reception area. I wouldn't say it's horrible or unbearable, just a weird smell of chlorine and chemicals.
Our room was okay. There were stains on the carpet, but nothing huge or disgusting. I requested a queen bed when I booked 8 months in advance, but we were given two singles. Again, no big deal. The bathroom was beautiful. Everything looked brand new.
I only have 2 proper complaints. Firstly, somebody needs to fix the fire alarm. It went off one night when it was raining heavily and the fire brigade arrived and told us it was just water leaking into the building and setting off the alarm. One hour later, it went off again and the fire brigade had to come out again. According to people that live in the building, the alarm goes off regularly. It went off again one morning at 8 am when it wasn't even raining.
Secondly, the $200 bond. I booked through a general Queensland accommodation website. I also read the hotels website. Neither website mentioned a bond. However when we arrived, we had to pay a $200 bond. We could afford it and I knew we'd get it back at the end of our stay, but it would have been nice to have been made aware of this rather than being told once we got there.
Overall, the place is not so bad. It's certainly not five star accommodation. But if it's all you can afford, it is cheap and right in the centre of Surfers Paradise.
