“Clean your own room!! I kid you not.”

There were no problems with the booking of this room which was done on the internet and the price quoted was the price charged. Now the trouble begins. Staff at admissions were indifferent to say the least, and instructions on how to reach the room, called a villa, were very offhand and when i queried the instructions I was handed a sheet with a very simple drawing. We set off for the room and I hope your car is not very large if you are staying in the best rooms as we were as the road to access the room was very labyrinthine, we have a smallish proton and getting into the park beside the room turned out to be best to reverse in which was acheived by driving into the parking space opposite then reversing back. Room smelt strongly of ammonia and vinegar, which was reassuring as we are not overly fond of harsh chemicals. Nice room with a kitchenette which we utilised as one visit to the restaurant in grounds was enough to dissaude us of going back there. The food was ordinary and took a long time to arrive though it was a simple order, grilled fish and medium steaks, the off putting thing was that i was seated near a wall down which were large food streaks and on looking up at the wall decorations, there were many cobwebs coated in dust. EEEWWW. The last straw was that on the night before leaving my daughter pointed out to me a notice on the wall which I had failed to notice. This notice informed me that I had to empty the inside rubbish bins and insert fresh liners, clean down all benches and the sink, ensure all crockery and cutlery were cleaned and replaced in their cupboards, ensure bathroom and spare bedroom were clean and tidy, strip any linen from beds that had been used and place all used linen and bath towels etc in a pile near the door. If these things were not done then a $50 surcharge would be made to our credit card. All the times that I have travelled and stayed, never before have I been made to clean the room. Never going to stay there again. I wonder though if the campers who stay in tent have to brush the grass to ensure it is all upright again or there will be a surcharge. We took photos of the notice and passed them to our friends, no staying there for anyone of our acquaintance.

“A perfectly acceptable stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2009

For $150 for a two bedroom cabin for the four of us, we weren't expecting the Hilton. What we got was perfectly acceptable during our road trip. Stayed here on 7th October for one night. The cabin was clean, well equipped and adequate for our needs. We even got free internet, though it is not advertised as being free!

“Tidy Park”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2009

Have stayed at the motel section a few times. Simple basic rooms, but tidy and reasonably priced. Close to shopping and cinema.
Recently stayed in a cabin as the motel part was booked out. The cabin was clean and tidy, however the bed was on wheels and being on the lino it moved A LOT. Just sitting on the bed the whole thing would roll away, that was pretty annoying!
Otherwise it was a good place to stay, the park is well kept and tidy.

“Absolutely disgraceful”

We stayed here a few years ago and have to say it was just absolutely disgusting the showers were dirty the rooms were dirty, the sheets I wont even mention them. It may have changed now but what ever you do don't go cheap with this on as the lowest price cabin wasn't worth a nights stay in.

“Never again!”

We had been holidaying in the outback from Brisbane, and booked a stay at the Tropical Wanderer on our way home. We stayed in a self-contained two bedroom unit for two nights (two adults and two children). The accommodation was relatively expensive for what is little more than a caravan park.

On arrival, we were greeted by a very rude desk clerk who informed us that the room we had booked was no longer available for the two nights. We were told that we would need to stay one night in one room, vacate before 10:00am the following morning, pack all our gear into the car, and then wait until 2:00 pm to get into another room for the following night. To avoid doing this, we had to take a more expensive room for both nights at a rack rate of $200/night. After conveying our dissatisfaction, the desk clerk begrudgingly offered a 10% discount so we ended up paying $180/night, although this was still considerably overpriced and no apology was ever forthcoming for the mix-up. We were even required to pay a $20 deposit on the room key!

We arrived in the room (a cabin) to find that it was quite unclean, the springs in the sofa were broken, the toilet paper dispenser was reminiscent of a public toilet, the cutlery and crockery required washing before use, the shower base was filthy, and the bedspread was stained. It was also a rather noisy environment and we were woken several times during the night by various loud noises. The restaurant menu was quite bizarre, and like something out of the 50s e.g., prawns served with cocktail sauce and buttered bread.

After a wonderful trip through Charleville, Barcaldine, Longreach, and Emerald, staying at the Tropical Wanderer was a bitter disappointment and definitely put a downer on the whole trip. I would NEVER stay there again and would strongly discourage anyone else from doing so.
