“Unfortunately Grossly overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

My family decided to travel to rockhampton for the night, so we booked into a "deluxe paradise apartment" ($240 per night) at the tropical wanderer.
Negatives- the beds are extremely uncomfortable, patched holes in the wall that have not been repainted, very basic tea and coffee (had to go ask for milk) tiny car parks and the waterfall over the pool looked liked it hadn't worked in a long time.
Positives- great service, Pools were lovely and the room was very clean.

“Not value for money.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

Room looked OK to start with but at $150 per night you have to clean the room ie dishes etc which makes you wonder how clean they would be. Booked a room with a triple bunk but put in a room with a double bunk. The cleanliness of the bunk room was terrible, my daughter found gum under the pillow, beds had to be made up by us, thick dust and dirty marks. No flyscreens. When we dropped something and went under the main bed to retrieve it, there was a receipt there from 6 weeks ago!! Sign in bathroom said to leave towels in shower for replacing but this was not done. Also, no toilet paper on arrival.
Location is convenient to get to Stocklands or head north.
If this was a budget or discount price would be OK but not at the price charged and the rooms should be clean - surely they have to clean it themselves to ensure hygiene standards. Perhaps they should advertise the fact so you know before you book.
Disappointing standard.

“Beautiful spot but value for money? Not sure....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011

We stayed here in the middle of an arduous driving experience moving to Townsville. We didn't have a booking but had researched their website and asked for a Palm Villa, got the last one. Service was friendly and efficient, the cabin was large with a couch and dining setting, outdoor setting, one bedroom with 4 bunks and one with a queen bed. Cost was $149.50 after Big4 discount which I thought was a bit steep. For that price we would have expected a) Austar, b) not having an industrial sized toilet roll dispenser which made it hard to sit on the toilet, c) not having to go to the office in the morning to get milk d) no fly spray, and e) a couple of small spiders in the shower! However the larger pool area is absolutely gorgeous and as it is behind the restaurant you are allowed to drink alcohol there, the part of the park containing the Palm Villas is very lush and green with heaps of palms. There is also a smaller pool together with a wading pool, a half-tennis court, and heaps of different accommodation options from the Tropical Villas down to tent sites and everything in between. It does seem as if the park has changed hands or is in the middle of a refurbishment as a whole heap of the smaller cabins were having windows replaced and there are a lot of new plantings. Overall I am not sure whether it is value for money but we would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Get a Palms Villa

“Service with a grimace”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2011

Booked here for a two night stay to attend a wedding in Rockhampton. We stayed in the motel section in a "deluxe" room. Receptionist was cold and impersonal and again, we had pre-booked and paid well in advance but were still distrusted and required to leave a credit card imprint as security even though they don't even have mini-bars. The room was large with adequate lighting, the televison small and the decor very dated. The biggest problem was the hard floor coverings and the thin walls. We were disturbed throughout our time in the room by noise from the carpark and from the neighbouring rooms.

The attached restaurant is a formula style with hot rock cuisine and was thus too limited to entice us. The real test was reception not wanting to refresh our room milk for the second day. At AUD$160 an night, with the cheapest consumables available and no biscuits, we were informed that milk on the first day was only a "starter pack" and milk was not supplied on subsequent days. What the? The room servicing cost is way less for a stop over guest, not the least being the cost of linen or the cleaning wages, so a 50c milk was too much?

It is usually these little things that distinguish a pleasant stay from an unpleasant one. Can't see why we would return to this one.

Room Tip: Try somewhere else.

“Not aesthetically pleasing....and there were cockroaches.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2011

Arrived - staff at front desk looked as if it was a burden for them to be there.
Went to room - Front step of cabin was loose, 1 large cockroach and about 20 small ones scuttled away as I walked in the front door, most flyscreens were ripped, decor was hideous - clearly no redecorating since they opened (which I'm assuming was the late 1970's), powerpoints were cracked and looked a little hazardous, everything looked and felt dirty.

Positives: Wireless was not free, but it was of reasonable speed. The gardens were nicer than the accomodation - perhaps I should have slept outside.

I wasn't expecting anything fancy, but I don't think the cabin was worth the $125 a night that I had to pay (more like $75 tops). There was a note explaining that the cabin had to be left clean upon checkout or a cleaning fee would be charged, which was laughable as it had most certainly not been cleaned to any kind of standard warranting a cleaning charge before my arrival. I was grateful to have a roof over my head, but I didn't enjoy my stay at all, and will not be recommending it or staying there again. Disappointing.
