“nice tropical accomodations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

This resort is a cluster of self housekeeping appartments with 2 pools and a small gym and spa.The grounds have lots of tropical foilage. Our efficiency had a microwave and small refrigerator as well as a balcony with table and chairs overlooking on of the pools. A big plus was the FREE self laundry facilities convenient to the rooms. That worked well for our 4 week touring trip (2 nights in Port Douglas). The staff is very helpful, but the desk is not manned in the evening. It is a 10 minute walk to the nearest restaraunt. or grocery.
This place was chosen by our travel agent and was very appropriate.

“Greedy management - need to understand customer satisfaction”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

We had booked a studio room which turned out to be tiny. We agreed to pay an extra $50 a night for a suite which was much larger with a lounge and a jacuzzi. Everything was extra. Wireless internet $16.50 a day but only allowed one laptop to connect. Room cleaning isn't included ($35 a day I think) but the final straw was when we asked for some clean towels and were told they were available for a small charge.
The management of this hotel need to understand their guests requirements rather than charge them for everything.

Dear David from London – thanks for your review!. Being your first time to Australia it may seem that we do things a little different to what you maybe accustomed to.

Considering that at check in our facilities were explained clearly and your demands were attend to promptly, to now state that Management was “Greedy” is very harsh and unwarranted.

I have gone into your original booking and I can confirm that your booking was made through a 3rd party web site in the UK. It seems that at the time you booked we had an international promotion offering a substantial % discount off the studio room rate for the 3 nights, plus you received 2 hours free internet, plus breakfast in a cafe in town, including late check out and a bottle of sparkling on arrival.

To clarify to the TripAdvisor readers, the internet is charged at the majority of properties in the area and in Australia, our prices are very reasonable considering that the internet we provide is “use as you go”, log on log off’ or in other words “accumulative time” and NOT PER DAY. To connect to 2 computers at the same time is not an option due to technicality reasons.

Seeing that you were given 2 hours for free, plus you felt the need for a further 15 hours of internet, giving you a total of 17 hours of internet time, for 3 days that is approximately 5 hours per day! Of course if you are working whilst on holidays I can understand the need! But even so $16.50 for 15 hours of internet is quite cheap considering that you can log on and off rather than having to sit at the computer for 15 hours to get your money’s worth.

Regarding the room cleaning the rate that was booked was a “on sale” rate which does not include Daily Service, this is taken away so that people can book “on sale” rates and the option of having the Daily Service is explained at check in, the $30 per day is to cover the replacement of towels, amenities, removal of rubbish, general clean and the cleaners time to provide this service. People actually are preferring the no Daily Service option as it means they are not bothered by cleaners and left to their privacy but also this gives Guests the option to have a service on a day they would prefer whilst staying at Shantara.

Upon arrival every room booked by the guest is provided with 6 bathroom towels plus 2 pool towels.

3rd party web sites do not always add and advertise all the information that is given to them on what Shantara provides onto their website. May I suggest that when booking on a 3rd party site that people ALSO visit the Shantara web site as this will be much more specific and you will be able to read and see what you have booked, if you still need assistance and require particular needs then I suggest that you email the Shantara team and we will be more than happy to answer any questions before your arrival.

Please be assured that we do understand Guests needs and ensure our Guests are welcomed and treated with respect and consideration in particular when coming from abroad for the first time, however it seems that a very small minority of people feel it necessary when in another country to be discourteous and objectionable

“Good stay in Port Douglas at Shantara”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

We stayed for 5 nights and loved Port Douglas, it was pretty hard to head back to Melbourne after our time in paradise!

When we first arrived we were taken to our room, and I was excited to step out onto the deck and see the pool....only to see a couple sitting on directly outside our unit on the deck, which was a bit awkward/instrusive.

The receptionist explained that given the layout of the resort, some rooms have to share a deck, but luckily, we were able to be moved to a room with an individual deck.

It's not the place to go if you want privacy. You get used to it though, and luckily it was during a quiet time so it wasn’t at full capacity. I could imagine it being really noisy and loud given a loud couple or group of people, as when in the pool you can also hear the reception area/everyone out on their decks.

I had a massage at the spa, which was lovely. Great location and a nice walk to the Main Street and beach.

All in all, very nice apartments, but we would look for something more private if we were to return to Port Douglas.

Room Tip: A room higher up might provide more privacy, but obviously you lose the option of direct access to t...

Thank you for your review and we are happy to hear you enjoyed your time at Shantara and Port Douglas.

The pool decks (4 rooms only) have been designed (design fault) that a garden bed is in the way of the deck making the deck a little smaller.

Please be aware that we do not advertise that the deck rooms are “your own private pool deck” but more that a Guest has access to the pool from their balcony at any time, having said this we are very much aware of this and do try to ensure that Shantara Guests are not made to feel awkward. Please note that the Shantara Apartments do have their own pool deck, with a private courtyard around the side.

For a very small minority of Guests it may be a concern of privacy but, being an “Adults Only” property Guests are very mindful of everyone’s privacy and are very respectful to each other without being interfering.

When Shantara is at full capacity the grounds are quiet to the point that Guests have commented on how peaceful it is to sit around and read a book without any disturbance.

Thanks again and all the best !

“The perfect Port Douglas getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

My mother, husband & I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Shantara. It was so clean, with modern facilities - everything you need to self cater. The location of the resort was perfect, just a 2 minute stroll to the beach and shopping, but still far away enough to be quiet and relaxing.
The pools were fantastic, clean and because it is an adult only resort they were always very quiet and relaxing.
The staff at Shantara were helpful from the moment we booked through the Trip Advisor website, answering emails promptly and anticipating any questions we had. They were so friendly & helpful while up there, they even had big umbrellas incase we got caught in a tropical rain shower.
They had a great little book swap that once finished my book I could swap it for another. These little touches are everywhere at Shantara and definately makes it worthwhile booking with them.
Thanks Shantara! It was the most relaxing vacation ever! We can't wait to come back.

Room Tip: We had the only 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom suite and it was very spacious for my husband and I and my mot...

“Honeymoon heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

We stayed at Shantara Apartments as our "mini-moon" before our real honeymoon in Europe. A getaway for 5 nights of relaxation after getting married in Sydney. Wow. From the time we walked in we were impressed by the resort, its facilities and especially our apartment.

We booked a Shantara Apartment with a spa bath, outdoor spa and pool entry from the balcony. Worth the little bit extra! It was so lovely to have a secluded place to relax with a glass of wine in our own spa, and also the choice of enjoying the pool. We were in 4A which got excellent morning sun during our summer holiday. The sun was on our balcony until around midday, we were happy to have the shade by that point anyway!

The front desk organised a Great Barrier Reef snorkelling tour with Wavelength which was amazing, and a hire car for our day in the Daintree Rainforest. Both of these were easy to organise through the resort.

The walk to the beach takes only 2 minutes (and that was in 32 degree heat!) and the walk to Macrossan street was, as my husband described it, "a one ice-cream walk" We walked into town most days and nights.

I'd definitely recommend Shantara to anyone, especially the fact that it doesnt cater to children. It is so relaxing and peaceful - especially for a honeymoon - to have only adults swimming outside your apartment.

The resort is new and clean looking, the room was spotless, the staff left a bottle of Sparkling wine in the fridge, the amenities were basic but helpful and the kitchen was well-equipped if you wanted to use it. Despite the fact that the room is only serviced daily for an extra charge, enough bath towels and pool towels are supplied that it isn't a problem.

We both booked a one hour massage with the Shantara Day Spa, and Zondar is magic! The massage was heavenly and remedial at the same time, and if I had had enough time, I definitely would have booked again during my stay.

Other things we would recommend doing is dinner at Nautilus, Salsa and Harrisons, definitely get out to the reef and the Daintree if you haven't been before, and afternoon drinks at "on the inlet" was nice too.
