“Wonderful hotel, but long walk from Port Douglas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

This hotel was heaven. We stayed here for two nights after two hectic weeks of travelling and sightseeing, and it was the perfect place to relax. The lobby, bar and restaurant were modern and immaculate. Our room was spacious and spotless, and we had a lovely balcony overlooking the tropical gardens/ Breakfast was delicious (ask if they're doing a 2-4-1 deal otherwise it's a bit pricey), and the pool was amazing. The cocktails served at the swim-up bar were the best we tasted in Australia, and great value in the happy hour (I think this was around 5pm). You can even eat your lunch in the pool, sitting on one of the stools at the swim-up bar. Couldn't have asked for more for our short two-day relax.

The only downside was that it was quite a long distance from the beach and the centre of Port Douglas and all the restaurants, bars and shops - about 2 miles if I remember correctly. This is a bit far for me to want to walk in the heat, or in the dark, but they have a shuttle bus which runs regularly into the town centre. If you don't want to stick to the timetable of the shuttle bus, or if you miss the last one - be aware that there aren't many taxis in Port Douglas. When we asked a waiter to call us a cab, he said that there were only two licenced taxis in the whole of Port Douglas, so we might have to wait a while.

We didn't notice any activities in the hotel, but this might be because we weren't looking out for them. We just wanted a good-looking resort with a pool, and we got exactly that!

“Honeymoon in Paradise”

Thank yo so much to the wonderful staff at Rydges. They made our honeymoon so special for us! We were there in August 2011 for 5 days. We felt like we had our own apartment! We stayed in a room with a huge bedroom, a living room, a fridge, and a stove for cooking. We went to Coles in town the first day and cooked most meals at home. The deck was our favorite part of the hotel. We had a dining table outside that faced the jungle as well as a full sized jacuzzi outside. It was great to be able to dine outside. There is also a nice outdoor bar near the lobby, as well as a really nice restaurant. We did not eat there, but that was because we cooked a lot of our dinners. The front desk staff were extremely helpful as well. We were able to book our dive trip on Quicksilver through them. I would definitely stay here again, and have already recommended it to several of our friends who will be traveling in the area. The shuttle comes every ten minuteness to take guests into town, which is about 5 minutes away. The pool was great too, but we spent most of our days at the beach instead.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the back units facing the jungle. More quiet than rooms facing the pool area.

“Very disappointing experience -plenty of alternatives to choose instead”

Very tired looking hotel, not particularly clean and poor service.

When I complained you could see in the staffs eyes that they had heard it all numerous times before.

Wouldn't stay with Rydges again!

“Amazing resort helped make our holiday!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

Had a fantastic 5 days at the Saybaya. The staff were fantastic and really went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time as well, especially the food and beverage staff. They were friendly and always willing to help and go the extra mile for us. The food, breakfast and dinner, was amazing quality and often it was hard to go into Port Douglas to eat there as we knew how good the food was at the resort. The facilities and rooms were great and we were really happy there. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there and will definitely go back in the future.

“Major renovations underway, but don't forget the basics!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

Great service and friendly staff. We were upgraded to 1 br appt, but accordingly had no room service.Renovations were explained on check in and didnt concern us too much - the temp breakfast room could have been made a little brighter and more welcoming rather than dark and dingy. The apartment was ok but listen - no matter how much money is spent on renovations to get to that magic 5 star status, I think a comfortable bed is a basic,
. A zip together pair of singles does not constitute a king !(I have noticed this comment from another reviewer). I have stayed in a few king rooms in my time and indeed have bought a king bed and the bed at Sabays was not a king but was the worst I have slept on in a 4 star property (I have slept in camper beds with more comfort). In this day and age wide screen LCD-LED TVs should also be a basic for lounge & bed rooms (not old analogs where you can only see half the screen). In short, good luck with the new breakfast/dining area renovations but dont forget the basics! And make sure you keep the staff who were welcoming, friendly & helpful.
