“Everything is so accessible and easy”

My wife and I just got back from our holidays staying 8 nights in Port Douglas retreat.

It is hard to compare with other hotels in Port Douglas, as we didn't see any there, but this place gave us everything we wanted.

David greeted us on arrival. Gave us valuable information about things to do in Port Douglas and surrounding areas. Showed us our room. Thank you David!

First good things about the place:
Very quite, we did not hear any noise around, except our air con running all night, so we slept very well.

We had a king room with pool view. The room and the bathroom was spacious, just like the bed. The kitchen was small, but had everything we needed to cook and eat in the room.

Undercover parking was always available. There were quite a few guests staying, but I guess not many of them had cars, as more than half of the parking area was empty.

The pool and barbeque area is very nice, shaded by palms and the hotel walls, we used the pool almost every evening.

Location is just perfect, as I mentioned it is very quiet, but everything is within 5 minutes walking distance. The 4 mile beach, coles supermarket, shops and restaurants etc.

Everything else was pretty standard.

The cons:
I should say none, here, but there just few minor things that we wish were different.

Using safe units in the room is not free. In all my experience staying in the hotels, i have never seen anyone charging for using them. A bit disappointing, as we had to keep our valuables in the car.

The room service. There is not much to it, our towels and beds were changed only once during 8 nights stay. We understand that the hotel is in competition to keep the prices down, so it is completely fine with us, we knew this from the beginning and utilized everything wisely. However after the room clean up was done, we discovered my wife's shirt missing. It was taken with linens and stuff by mistake , as being white it probably blended with them. We had to inform the staff. In few minutes it was returned to us. Thank you for that. However it cost me some explanation to my wife, that it was not one of my weird jokes.

Can recommend this hotel to families, couples and solo travelers

Room Tip: just in case, away from barbeque area, and maybe closer to the parking lot if you are with a car

“Great location, lovely people”

Port Douglas Retreat is a picturesque, peaceful complex nice and close to the heart of Port Douglas - and yet not so close to be noisy or have much traffic.
It was a great place to relax after a busy day sightseeing, the room was fine for what we needed, and David & Joyce couldn't do enough for us. The pool is mostly shaded, but the deck seemed to get quite a bit of sun, and the bbq area was good to use too. The trees realy add character to the place and make it seem very tropical - plus there are birds galore, which was great to listen to. Air con is a little noisy if you have it on, but that was the ony thing wrong at all. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the pool.

“A pleasant stay”

From the moment I arrived, as David came to the airport transfer bus to help with my luggage, I felt welcome. He and Joyce were very helpful and friendly.
The location is excellent; close to the beach, shops and restaurants and not far from the harbour. The room was spacious and well equiped with a balcony overlooking trees. The pool was the best of my month in Australia: warm water and surrounded by tropical trees and brightly coloured lorikeets.
David and Joyce gave excellent advice on trips which were all brilliant. (The only time I went to see soemthing they hadn't recommended - the cane toad racing- it was rubbish!)
A really pleasant stay.

“A real gem, and perfect for the tropical sun!”

We have just returned from an 8 day stay, and found Port Douglas Retreat to be just that - a wonderful, peaceful spot, fantastic location just 5 minutes from the beach and shops, with a stunning garden and wonderful birdlife. Contrary to the previous comments, the lovely trees around the beautiful pool offer welcome respite from the Queensland sun, and as the sun moves round you simply move your lounger! Great facilities, David and Joyce as managers were always on hand with advice if needed - a fantastic stay, and having looked at so many other options in P.D, this definitely represents the best value and experience - we are planning now for a return visit!

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the pool, but not too near the barbecue area and on the first floor so ver...

“If you want to sunbathe, don't go here.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2011

From the outside the premises look lovely and are built in a colonial style, but it's a shame guests can't take advantage of the balmy climate on the beautiful pool and decking area. Mostly there is very little direct sunshine on the sun terrace as it is surrounded by trees. I was not the only one who found this disappointing - whenever I went down to the sundeck to see if I could catch a few rays, two or three other guests with the same thing in mind were muttering about the place needing a tree surgeon. I don't subathe all day, but I like to chill out for an hour or two perhaps after I've been somewhere and this is very much part of my holiday, so I was very disappointed. Our apartment, which was admittedly one of the cheaper 'tree view' ones, was clean and serviceable but gloomy and chilly as, again, the trees were right up against the balcony and there was no direct sunlight at all. When leaving the apartment and getting out on to the street, we were always surprised how warm it was outside! However, the position of the establishment is very central, so if you don't want to sunbathe it is fine.

Room Tip: For maximum sunshine and privacy, ask for a pool view room on the upper floor.

We thank our guests for their review and we remember these guests very well.

In regards to our trees, pool decking and shade, all our trees are registered with the local government. These are beautiful, very old, native paper bark trees and we are not allowed to remove nor would we ever want to remove these grand old trees. Even pruning has to be approved. Our guests travelled during our winter and these beautiful trees protect our guests during the hot summer sun. It is sad that some would want to have these trees cut down.

The pool deck is a very popular place for our guests to sit back and enjoy and is never, ever in full shade. There are some shady positions but all that needs to be done is to move the sun lounges to the sunny areas or move to the shady areas when guests need protection as most guests will do - it is an easy task.

Our native trees attract many butterflies and birds who eat from the trees and nest in them. We try to live with nature rather than cut down and remove trees just so there is hot full sun over the pool deck. Natural, partly shaded areas offer protection and gives a choice to those guests who want full, part or little sun while they are on the sun deck.

Incidentally, Port Douglas Retreat has just been awarded Best Gardens in the region for 2011. Verdant trees and gardens are what our guests enjoy while staying with us and holidaying in Tropical North Queensland.
