When thinking back of my time backpacking through Australia, the Northern Greenhouse is definitely one of the best hostels I have stayed in. Swimming pool, large terrace, free wifi, located in a calm street but still in the "city" center, large and clean kitchen, theme nights- yes I had an awesome time in this hostel. The rooms are clean and have an own bathroom. The only thing which I found a little disturbing was that the aircon is located right next to one top bed which means one person in this room will freeze while the others sweat- means fighting whether it's on or off. Anyways, STAY IN THIS HOSTEL you won't regret it.

Although i rarely ever write reviews, i personally felt like the northern greenhouse deserved the time and effort, i would highly recommend this hostel, especially with only 6 per dorm with ensuite bathroom and lockers as week as our own small kitchenette so you don't have to store food in the main kitchen. In the middle of the hostel is a nice pool area for sunbathing or swimming. And then there is the communal lounge area and kitchen which is decked and looksreally nice just hang out, with free unlimited wifi that isn't too slow which you don't find at many hostels, which was great. The staff were also really helpful especially Dominique who helped sorted out trips for us and even gave us a discount. The hostel also organises day trips and has regular movie nights and day trips out all free off charge. The hostel is also in a good location, close to gilligans and 10 minute walk to the lagoon and waterfront. If you need somewhere to stay in cairns, I would defiantly recommend this is the place to be.

The location is great. Close to everyting, but the street itself is not that noisy (except when they clean the streets, but that doesn't take too long. The staff is wonderfull and very relaxed. They have no strict reception times, which is a blessing! You can check-in early or late, it doesn't matter. They have free pancakes (not the best, but it will do when you're hungry) on Saturday around 11AM. If there are many people, wait 20-25 minutes and the line will be gone haha. The free barbecue on Sunday at 5 PM is really good! They play movies on Wednesday and Sunday and they fixed the soundsystem, that's nice. They could play a movie every night. Free wifi, but there are a lot of people using it, so your I-phone might not work. Free internet, but is it very slow. They really should replace the computers, that would help a lot. The rooms are allright, but there are no seperate toilets. Everything is ensuite, which is not handy when you are with 6 girls in a dorm. You can use the bar, but it is not always open (ask for the key at the reception, if you really need to go). I would love it, if they also offered a 4-girl dorm. The rooms are a bit small for 6 girls. Maybe they can take the kitchen out of the room and just leave the fridge. You can smoke on the balcony (each room has one, which is great) and near the nice swimming pool.

Rooms: 6 beds with ENSUITE TOILET! That's fantastic compared to some places that have the whole level sharing 1 toilet. CLEAN ROOM AND BED. very important to me.

Freebies: WIFI IS FREE!! out on the deck you get free unlimited wifi which is awesome. Free breakky and pancakes on Saturday, BBQ on Sunday and all sorts of places you can go to for free just sign up at the reception. Crystal Cascades on Monday, Botanic Gardens on Tuesday.. etc

Friendly people, young crowd, relatively quiet enough to sleep well yet enough activity to make the place feel lively. Nice pool for dips in summer.

Location, 5~10min walk to Cairns Central where you can find Coles and lots of other shops. 5~10min walk to the lagoon and the fleet terminal where all the boats are. Right opposite the cinema. Right next to Rusty's markets.

All round good backpackers to stay at.
