I spent one week at The Oaks 212 Margaret in Brisbane and had a fantastic time. I was slightly apprehensive because on this occasion I was a female travelling on my own although I would be meeting up with my nephew, his wife and their new-born son who live on the outskirts of Brisbane.
From the moment I checked in to the time I left I was impressed with the helpful and friendly Reception staff. Nothing was too much trouble including explaining to me how to use the phone card I had just bought from a local store.
I have seen comments on Trip Advisor about the staff being rude but the only evidence of rudeness I saw was from other guests towards the staff.
Upon arrival I was handed some paperwork which included a comprehensive list of apartment and building facilities. This clearly stated what I could expect from my stay, including cleaning arrangements, and I have no complaints whatsoever.
I was fortunate to be allocated a one-bedroom executive apartment on the top floor. The apartment itself was superb with views towards the Botanical Gardens and the River. It was more than adequate for my needs, was clean and tidy, had a washing machine and tumble drier in a cupboard in the bathroom, and the quality of the bed linen and towels was superb.
I would also comment on the safety elements of this hotel. As well as a door key you are given a security fob key which you need to swipe in order to activate the lift, gain access to your apartment floor, level 5 (where the Gym, Pool and BBQ area are located), Car Park levels as well as afterhours access to the front entrance between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. This extra security definitely gave me peace of mind knowing that access was strictly limited particularly when Reception was closed.
The Hotel is very conveniently situated in CBD within easy walking distance of many of the sights, especially the shopping and dining. I found it very simple to find my way around. It is worth buying a “round-trip” ticket (AUD 5.20) on the City Cat which takes just over 2 hours stretching from The University of Queensland at one end to Apollo Road at the other.
Whilst in Brisbane my digital camera batteries “died” but I had left my charger in the UK. Reception advised me to go to JB Hi-Fi located at 195 Albert Street (about 10 minutes’ walk) where Prakash couldn’t have been more helpful. He originally suggested that I purchase a new charger but when he realised I already had a charger and that the Australian version wouldn’t work in the UK, he very kindly recharged my battery in the shop for free. What a fantastic service and so unexpected.
To sum up, Brisbane is a lovely city and there are many hotels to suit every budget. I would definitely use the Oaks 212 Margaret again due to its convenient location, good security for a woman travelling on her own and excellent facilities. It is worth paying a supplement for a larger room on a higher floor – Room 3005 was superb. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful and were more than willing to give me any assistance I required.
Room Tip: Worth paying a supplement for a larger room on a higher floor.
