“Quirky alternative”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

My work colleague and I had rooms for an overnight stay here and is was a great alternative to the sterile, modern hotel/motels that we normally use. It is like stepping back in time to a bygone era with creaky floors, hallway runners and wall panelling. It didn't have mod cons but really was a great alternative. For $100 per night it was basic (as expected) and there was a verandah decking area at the front where other guests can hang out and watch a movie etc. Has a good atmosphere. My only criticism is in regards to the lack of sound proofing in the rooms. A loud conversation at 6am between the manager and a guest travelled straight up the hallway and was as loud as if they were in my room which was not how I wanted to wake up in paid accommodation. The mugs in the room were dirty and I wouldn't use them. In general a good place to stay though - cheap and cheerful.

“Just What We Needed”

We stayed at Brisbane Manor while attending a Congress at the Old Museum. The location was perfect, right across the road from our event, and a 10-15minute walk from the train station, supermarket and Fortitude Valley's Cafes, Restaurants and Bars. The manor is a fair distance from the city itself, so we only managed to see the city on one evening when we met with a Brisbane local who had a car.

Initially we had some problems with our room reservation being lost, however the Manor more than made up for it upgrading us from the room we had booked to the Loft. They were also able to give us good directions for transport from the airport and when we enquired at reception about local restaurants the receptionist we spoke to was happy to do some research online and point us in the right direction.

The facilities at the Manor are a pleasing mishmash between a hostel and a hotel, if you are booking expecting hostel facilities you will be very impressed, however if you are expecting hotel facilities you might be a little disappointed. Each private room has a fridge which was brilliant, so convenient for our drinks and breakfasts and it saved us storing food in the communal kitchen. one of our friend's rooms also had a microwave.

Cleanliness was pretty good, although it was obvious the cleaners had taken some shortcuts with a few grimey corners and scummy showers. We were also a little disappointed that our towels weren't changed (we were told to leave them on the ground to have them changed) and it did take two days to replace a toilet roll. Still overall it was really pretty good and I would rate above average in my experience.

I will definitely book again for the same event, the location could not have been better for us and our stay was really very comfortable. This hostel can be noisy, and some rooms are far noisier than others. Our room had a very squeaky fan/vent in it which was a little annoying but I think it was probably the quietest room in the hostel, so next time I will take earplugs.

Beds were firm and comfortable and the sun deck was a lovely feature. If you're needing to be close the The Old Museum you really can't do better.

Thanks!

Room Tip: Bring earplugs for a better sleep. The Loft is large and relatively quiet, rooms with balconies over...

“DON'T STAY HERE!!! BED BUGS!!!”

I'm from Melbourne and I stayed here for 2 nights and was attacked by bed bugs,
by the time I got home my arms were COVERED in them. I had to get an exterminator in
at my home and I threatened the hotel with legal action and they ended up paying back
the money that the exterminator cost me ($300+ plus loads of stress and hassle).
Months later and I still have scars from the bites. Don't risk it!!!

“Great Location, Good Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2011

The Manor is very conveniently located in downtown Brisbane. The rooms are modern and well appointed. The staff are helpful and friendly and are on hand if you need them but not obtrusive at all which I appreciate. The rooms themselves have a well appointed kitchette with fridge, cooktop, diswasher. The rooms also have washing machines and irons as standard.

I would recommend this hotel to either the business traveller or for a short family vacation. The hotel doesnt offer many of the facilities of larger hotels but it is an excellent base to do business or explore the city from.

“OK for what you get.”

We stayed at the Brisbane Manor for just under a week. Overall we found it comfortable, although it lacked some mod cons. We booked an en-suite room, which was adequate, albeit the decor was circa the 1970s and the walls thin, so every noise from outside could be heard. Initially, we had been given a room that faced the side of building car park. However, due to our neighbours noisy air-con unit, we were moved to a similar, yet better room, with a balcony, over looking the self serve BBQ and kitchen area.

The premises were clean although, we did encounter a roach or two. The staff were quick to spray the room and apologise. We did hear reports of bed bugs, thankfully though, we did not suffer from them in either of the rooms we stayed in. I did however, suffer with bad sleep for the entire stay, whether this was me or the vibe of the place I'm not sure.

Both rooms had a fridge, with tea and coffee replenished daily, plentiful hot water and a TV. The channel selection was little poor, only 5 to choose from. Below, in the belly of the building you found a fully functional kitchen with all the utensils and condiments needed to cook a decent meal. There was also a self serve laundromat. However, it was a little expensive for a 30 minute wash. The front of the building had decking with two public areas, one side fitted with a large LCD and Austar/Foxtel. The other with vending machines for the late night munchies. Again, the cost of the vended food was a little over the top, but it seemed everything in Australia is expensive nowadays.

Location wise, you are a few blocks away from Fortitude Valley central, and about 30 minutes walk away from Brisbane central.

As far as up market hostels go, this one was fine. It could do with a modern makeover and white linen. What is it with Australians and floral bedding/coloured towels? I would recommend to the more rough and ready type traveller and not my more upmarket colleagues.
