We stayed here for three nights in a private double with ensuite.
At the time we stayed there were a few large events going on in Brisbane so the hostel was completely full. Due to that, the first thing we noticed was how efficient the staff at the reception desk were. There was a big queue but it was like a well-oiled machine and everyone had their queries answered quickly and politely. In fact, during our stay the reception always seemed to be busy but the service remained at a high standard, so I would commend the staff for that.
The room had a double-bunk and a single bunk, so it might also be used as a dorm when not booked for private use. The room facilities included a fridge, TV, cupboard, drawers and tea/coffee. The ensuite was perfectly acceptable and, like the room, was in a clean condition. It also had a little balcony overlooking the road, but it was south-facing so didn't get any sun.
There was a bit of background noise, firstly because of the noise from the main road and secondly from having so many people staying at that particular time, so you just have extra noise. It wasn't a big deal though and we had no trouble sleeping.
The kitchen was pretty full-on when a lot of people were trying to use it and the communal dishes like pots and pans piled up pretty quickly, making things a bit messy. Somehow the idea of doing your own dishes is just too complex for some people. For that reason, apart from breakfast, we decided not to do our own meals and just ate at local places which, in the West End, were fantastic and suited to all budgets. The hostel did have their own meal specials which were very cheap and didn't look too bad. They have a no BYO alcohol policy in place so you either drink in their bar or not at all. The better option is to go to one of the great bars in the West End though.
With all the people and the use of swipe access cards it felt like a safe place to be. We were comfortable enough to leave our bags there while we went to drop off/pick up our rental vans, meaning they were left there unattended at reception most of the day, on two occasions, and nothing went missing.
If you are travelling there in a campervan and want to sleep in it, they do have limited overnight parking spots for small vans. I can't remember how much that was but it wasn't excessive.
They did have a shuttle bus service but since you see much more on foot so we chose to walk. It is well located nearby to the West End and South Bank so plenty to see, do, eat and drink nearby.
We thought this was one of the more well-run hostels we'd encountered. Everything was done very efficiently and with a minimum of fuss. Staff were very helpful and the facilities were perfectly fine.
