I stayed in the Banyan View lodge in the (quiet) wet season in January 2012.
As everyone says, that's the quiet end of town, but when it's only 10 minutes walk to the centre it doesn't really matter. The building is on three floors with the corridor on each and a small lounge at the end of each floor. There's a flat screen and a minikitchen in each lounge, and the main kitchen is on the ground floor. When I was there it was 34° each day, and the lounges were roasting with no air conditioning and ceiling fans not making much difference. Basically, you don't really want to hang out and chat in the lounges, which is disappointing if that's one reason why you're staying in a hostel.
I stayed in a single room - the website said there was only one left, but I suspect it's actually the only one in the building. It was fine, with painted white breezeblock block walls, a clean and working fridge, fan, and a tea and coffee set. A decent towel and soap were provided. There was air conditioning in my room, which worked great. The toilets and showers were okay, although the one on my floor was for ladies only.
One of the ladies on the front desk, Chloe, was really helpful and friendly in trying to book tours and events despite there not being much on in the quiet season. If you're here in the wet, definitely plan and book ahead, as many tours only run every second or third day, or sometimes not at all.
Overall, the hostel was perhaps TOO quiet, although maybe preferable to a party hostel in the peak season.
