“BED BUGS!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2011

Before going to YHA in Alice Springs, I stayed in YHA in Melbourne and Canberra, which I thought was worth my money. My experience in Alice Springs of the YHA was so different (even though they charge you the same than in Melbourne and Canberra YHA). It was dirty: the kitchen as well as the room I was in. And imagine that when I got home the bedbug bites came out on my skin. The only good thing about the hostel was that every night the staff was showing Australian movies on a big screen outdoors. The other was that this hostel is located in the very center of the town.

“Good for a brief stop in Alice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 May 2011

Stayed here twice before and after an Uluru tour, like most of the rest of the hostel!

The private double was fine, nothing special but clean and a reaonable size. The pool was pleasant and we had it ourselves each time we used it. We didn't really use the kitchen but it seemed ok. The shower facilities were adequate but the second time we stayed we realised there were ones which were nicer. Staff were extremely helpful. There is a place to leave bags while going on the Uluru tours and they will also look after valuables. Our laptop didn't fit in the safe boxes but it was put in the office for us.

“A reasonable stop for one night”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 April 2011

Pleased with how clean and tidy and organised everything was (not being a big fan of slumming it!). The kitchen was well equipped and clean. The pool is a bonus. We had a comfortable night and it was convenient for the town.

“Well-located hostel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2010

This place is very well located in central Alice Springs, near to the "sails". The site used to be a drive-in cinema, and the history is kept alive with nightly outdoor film screenings. The staff were very helpful, organising groups of travellers for airport transfers (More people in a taxi = money saved) and storing bags for those going off on an Uluru tour (i.e. almost everyone). The pool is tiny, but very welcome to cool off. And you need to cool off a lot out here!

“well-located and value hostel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 May 2010

3 nights in a 4 share room was great value, compared to motel prices. Had read quite a few comments on the YHA site that the kitchen was dirty - well the problem is dirty guests, not lack of effort by staff. Kitchen starts out clean each day, but soon lazy and thoughtless guests leave dishes around or splash stuff and then don't see their mess or don't care.
The nature of departures is that people get up for 6am tour departures, so expect noise in your room or on the walkway outside. Showing movies nightly at 7.30 is a nice touch. Top location, easy access to supermarkets and other facilities.
Be aware that list for shuttle to airport isn't consistently on the desk, and they don't readily tell you that pick up is NOT at the hostel but around the corner at the Aurora Hotel. Shuttle price one-way $18.50 v $32 for taxi, so if you can team up its a lot simpler to get a taxi instead of being carted around town doing pickups.
