WE stayed at the Central Private Hotel because we ran out of options - everywhere else was either booked or ridiculously expensive because this was lead in week for the mardi gras. The location was not too bad, easy walk to central station, china town, Paddy's markets and Darling harbour was not far off either. The room was generally clean and the bedding was fresh. Thats about all the positives I can provide... the building is old and the rooms are very very basic. The room we stayed in, a twin with ensuite, had 3 tiny tissue box sized windows situated about 9 feet up the wall meaning that there was no air or natural light coming into the room at all. Underneath these ridiculous tiny and very high windows were plastered signs asking us not to throw rubbish through the windows as there were CCTV cameras outside watching for litterers.... but the signs also assured us that while police action would be taken if we managed to shoot some litter through the windows our privacy was completely assurred!!! Of course it is Summer, and while the heat was not overbearing outside, once we got inside our jail cell sized, windowless room it was quite hot. There is no AC only a pedestal fan which was really noisey. At night the room was so stuffy that we had to wet our hair under the shower so that the breeze from the fan caused an evaporative effect and made it bareable to sleep there. The TV had about a 25cm screen and no remote! There is free internet, which we used to try to find alternate accomodation (no luck). WE figured we could make good use of the free internet and play music or watch movies online... great idea, but the system is rigged so that whilst you can access everything you like, you cannot actually get volume. The guys at the front were not particularly helpful - we asked if they could recomend a Yum Cha restaraunt and give us directions and the asnwer was always "no" or "I don't Know". If you are desperate and on a budget it will do... oh, I forgot to mention, the sink and "kitchenette" are in the bathroom.... yep, the place you brush you teeth and wash you hands after using the bathroom is the same place you prepare food and wash your dishes... we ate out! Now while there was a minimal service provided and everything was a little "rough around the edges" we were surprised to find that at 1 minute past check out time the staff kicked into high gear and began knocking on the door asking us to leave!!
