“Cheap - and you get what you pay for!”

WE stayed at the Central Private Hotel because we ran out of options - everywhere else was either booked or ridiculously expensive because this was lead in week for the mardi gras. The location was not too bad, easy walk to central station, china town, Paddy's markets and Darling harbour was not far off either. The room was generally clean and the bedding was fresh. Thats about all the positives I can provide... the building is old and the rooms are very very basic. The room we stayed in, a twin with ensuite, had 3 tiny tissue box sized windows situated about 9 feet up the wall meaning that there was no air or natural light coming into the room at all. Underneath these ridiculous tiny and very high windows were plastered signs asking us not to throw rubbish through the windows as there were CCTV cameras outside watching for litterers.... but the signs also assured us that while police action would be taken if we managed to shoot some litter through the windows our privacy was completely assurred!!! Of course it is Summer, and while the heat was not overbearing outside, once we got inside our jail cell sized, windowless room it was quite hot. There is no AC only a pedestal fan which was really noisey. At night the room was so stuffy that we had to wet our hair under the shower so that the breeze from the fan caused an evaporative effect and made it bareable to sleep there. The TV had about a 25cm screen and no remote! There is free internet, which we used to try to find alternate accomodation (no luck). WE figured we could make good use of the free internet and play music or watch movies online... great idea, but the system is rigged so that whilst you can access everything you like, you cannot actually get volume. The guys at the front were not particularly helpful - we asked if they could recomend a Yum Cha restaraunt and give us directions and the asnwer was always "no" or "I don't Know". If you are desperate and on a budget it will do... oh, I forgot to mention, the sink and "kitchenette" are in the bathroom.... yep, the place you brush you teeth and wash you hands after using the bathroom is the same place you prepare food and wash your dishes... we ate out! Now while there was a minimal service provided and everything was a little "rough around the edges" we were surprised to find that at 1 minute past check out time the staff kicked into high gear and began knocking on the door asking us to leave!!

“Pretty sure there would be something better around!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2010

It appears that this place has had a minor renovation take place since the last reviews in February & March 2010.
And my photos are an improvement on the 9 August 2008 submitted photos by Johnny Travelr!

I realise it is 'BUDGET' but................

We booked a "Double Room Ensuite"
not much room in toilet/shower space (dry yourself in front of sink)
after showering water everywhere in toilet/shower space so had to side stradle loo!
discovered used condom behind head of double bed
heaps of dust behind bedhead and small chest of drawers to left of bed
no extra lounge chair as in pictures on net! (http://www.not1night.com.au/hotels/central-private-hotel-city.html)
had to 'turn on' hot water taps a long way for hot water in shower and over sink to eventually come through
slapped up paint job on room walls
hung blanket up over window to stop easterly sunshine coming in through thin curtains in the morning
didn't dare use net after previous reviews
power boards everywhere
dead power point near head of bed so power cord running along floor under window from near TV
hardly got any TV channels even though you were in centre of Sydney
door is lockable along with security chain
double bed ROCK HARD!
no heating
no cooling
only 2 pillows
only 2 blankets and flimsy cotton quilt on bed (not substantial enough for winter)

You got:
clean sheets
clean towels
2 packets of soap
clean bath mat
box of tissues
some toilet paper
newish electric jug
some teabags, coffee sachets, sugar sachets
newish fridge
2 mugs, 2 glasses
dinner plates, bread and butter plates (NO BOWLS)
couple of knives, couple of forks, couple of spoons, couple of teaspoons
very small TV with not many channels
cupboard for your clothes (hope you didn't bring along too many) along with a few mismatched coathangers
tiled bathroom/toilet

Maybe for someone used to living it a bit rougher would have coped with this place!
I originally wasn't going with my husband and a change of plan last thing and being able to upgrade to a double room we kept the booking!
I am 6 months pregnant and the rock hard double bed did not help either of us nor my husband!
About the only good thing was we were in Room 8 at the end of the 1st floor so no street noise or other guests going to their rooms on the Saturday night, even though we over looked a private car park!
Yes, it was close to Central Railway Station and the CBD

Do Not Believe the 'room' photos on this website
http://www.cphsydney.com/

Photos are close to the real thing on this site although they appear to make it look half reasonable
http://www.not1night.com.au/hotels/central-private-hotel-city.html
We paid $109 for the City 2 Surf weekend not the $84 they are offering for a Saturday night Double Room Ensuite on the above site!
It says 'hotel under renovation' - think it was and now they've stopped!
No hair dryer
No ironing board
This is a joke - "The rooms also feature an ensuite bathroom and basic facilities in the kitchenette."
Yes it did have 'Laundry & Dryer access'

I'll let you be the judge on your own individual needs and wants!!!!

Good luck

“Spend the extra $10 a night and stay somewhere else”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 March 2010

Pretty much all the other reviews sum up my experience at this 'hotel'. If it was listed as a backpackers I might be more forgiving, but even then its still pretty disgraceful. Stayed here on my first trip to Sydney - not the best introduction to the city but fortunately it was only for 2 nights.

Drove from Canberra (NOT recommended by the way - not much point having your car in Sydney city), and asked at reception if there was anywhere nearby to park our car ie a 24hour carpark place. All I got was a shrug and vacant look; I assume she just didn't understand what I was asking as her English was 50/50. Not a good start. The only redeeming feature of this place was the internet access on new computers inside the rooms (which is how we found somewhere to park the car), but as most people have mentioned, they are full of viruses, porn, etc. Basically just a free-for-all with no security or restrictions on what you can use the computer for.

Room was depressing, dingy and fairly unclean. View out 'windows' to a brick wall. The fan in the room did very little and with the windows open (the tiny amount they actually opened) you could hear all the other residents and neighbours yelling and screaming at each other all night long. The 'ensuite' was just a wall built around the toilet and shower, with a wood sliding door to close which didn't lock or even shut properly.

Sydney can be expensive to stay in, but for $100/night you can get somewhere a LOT better than this. Even the other backpacker/youth hostels in the area, which are probably half the price. So don't bother with this dump.

“Mixed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 February 2010

After reading the reviews on tripadvisor (after having booked the accomodation) i had trepidations about staying but with most other accommodation booked out for the weekend, there was little other reasonably priced choices.

In our group there was a couple and a single, we each booked room with an en-suite, and upon arrival was pleasantly surprised, it wasn't an outstanding place, but it looked reasonably clean and neat. so we settled in for the night.
only to find out that one of the rooms had a bed bug infestation. big bed bugs, that had also gotten into clothes and bags of the rooms occupant, a complaint was raised and money was refunded but i can not recommend this place. it was an unfortunate downside to an otherwise great time in sydney.
