“disturbance of the peace night time from the main street”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

We booked 4 nights there. Hotel facilities were ok but the situation has become unbearable due to the noise coming from the main street night time.
Indeed, this hotel is situated at the end of "the red-lights district". It's a nice place day and evening time but, almost every night, around 11pm, started a procession of cars: horn, sharp accelerations, full brakes, shouting between people, sound of broken bottles,....
Closing windows didn't change anything because they're not double glazing...

The hotel has also rooms in the back, with nice view ... but they're much more expensive...
Then if you can afford the price, this hotel is OK, otherwise,....

“Good price - great location”

This is a modest, old hotel, not fancy, but for the location, the price is excellent. It is clean and adequate and service was consistently good. We would not hesitate to recommend it.

My husband and I stayed here twice - four nights on our arrival in Sydney and two more at our departure. For the first stay we were at the rear of the hotel in a large, kitchenette room which had a window facing on a small, tree-lined side street - a very good room. One block away is a good sized Woolworth's grocery store, which also sells wine and beer. My husband and I are a retired couple, who like to walk; the Botanical Gardens, Opera House, and Harbor sights are all within walking distance of this hotel.

On our return, we opted for a less expensive,non-kitchen room, twin double - as we anticipated eating out. This room was in the interior of the hotel, with no window to the outside and though adequate for a night's sleep, was very small. In hindsight, would have taken the larger room for both stays.

The service was consistently good. Staff are always present, professional, and helpful. Apparently they are upgrading some rooms to include WiFi, but we had to use their computers (they have two) in the lobby.

Some customers have mentioned the proximity to the red light district. It begins about three or four blocks from the hotel, but does not spill over into the hotel neighborhood. There is, in fact, a police station in between and we did not feel unsafe or threatened at any time. Parking, if you have a car, is in a large, secure parking structure behind the police station - a short distance from the hotel.

We would certainly stay here again if we return to Sydney.

“Would definitely stay again!”

This hotel is in a great location, a quiet part of macleay Street, with a bus stop to Central railway station directly outside and another bus stop to nearby Circular Quay opposite. A Woolies supermarket is also just over the road.
We are a retired couple from country NSW, in Sydney for a short city escape. On our arrival we were greeted by very friendly staff who then offered us an upgrade on our standard room at no extra cost. Although small, the compact room had everything we needed, including a writing desk. The bed was firm and comfortable and there was a choice of pillows (hard/soft, fat/flat) in the cupboard if you didn't like the one provided on the bed. Bed linen, towels etc were of good quality though with no top sheet and only a doona, it was a little too warm for a mid-summer's night in Sydney. The window could be opened a short way for fresh air if one didn't want the air conditioner. The lift was a little dodgy so beware when getting in/out as the door closes very fast! When we asked at the reception desk when we were leaving, if we could leave our luggage at the hotel (check out time was 10:30am and our train didn't leave until late afternoon), the staff on the desk were most obliging - again, no extra cost.

“7 holes in my bath towel”

I stayed in a single room with bath and shower in november 2011 for $170 a night. To my dismay after showering I discovered there were 7 x1-2 cm holes in the bath towel. Also a few mm holes in the sheet. When I complained to the manager he said to ask for a new towel . I wrote a letter of complaint but received no reply

“For the money, very reasonable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

My fiancee and I stayed here for 3 nights. We booked a double room through Travel Republic, and when we checked in, we had been assigned a twin room! The guy on the desk showed us that it was TR who had requested the twin, and as they had no available doubles, we had to stay in the twin for that night. It was very clean, but the shower was abysmal, which was rubbish as we had spent two weeks in a camper van and were really looking forward to a long hot shower! Also the walls were wafer thin, and we heard many questionable noises that night...

The next day, after spending all day wandering around Sydney, we got back to the hotel to discover that we had a double room on the other side of the hotel, with our bags moved, as promised. Although smaller, with no kitchen, the shower was much better, and it was much quieter at night!

You need to get up early for breakfast, as it runs out. I need more than half a cup of coffee to start the day!! Stay away from the danishes...

All the staff we dealt with were friendly and helpful, and checking out at 5am to catch our plane was no bother. For what we paid, I was quite happy and would stay there again.
