This is a modest, old hotel, not fancy, but for the location, the price is excellent. It is clean and adequate and service was consistently good. We would not hesitate to recommend it.
My husband and I stayed here twice - four nights on our arrival in Sydney and two more at our departure. For the first stay we were at the rear of the hotel in a large, kitchenette room which had a window facing on a small, tree-lined side street - a very good room. One block away is a good sized Woolworth's grocery store, which also sells wine and beer. My husband and I are a retired couple, who like to walk; the Botanical Gardens, Opera House, and Harbor sights are all within walking distance of this hotel.
On our return, we opted for a less expensive,non-kitchen room, twin double - as we anticipated eating out. This room was in the interior of the hotel, with no window to the outside and though adequate for a night's sleep, was very small. In hindsight, would have taken the larger room for both stays.
The service was consistently good. Staff are always present, professional, and helpful. Apparently they are upgrading some rooms to include WiFi, but we had to use their computers (they have two) in the lobby.
Some customers have mentioned the proximity to the red light district. It begins about three or four blocks from the hotel, but does not spill over into the hotel neighborhood. There is, in fact, a police station in between and we did not feel unsafe or threatened at any time. Parking, if you have a car, is in a large, secure parking structure behind the police station - a short distance from the hotel.
We would certainly stay here again if we return to Sydney.
